“If I wanted to annoy the other Chelsea players, I’d put The Fall on”
My fifth guest on A Way From Home is Pat Nevin.
Pat is a former footballer who made over 600 professional appearances over a 20 year career, playing for the likes of Chelsea, Everton, and Scotland. He is now a well respected radio and television pundit.
Described by the NME as ‘the first post-punk footballer’ - and by his Chelsea team mates as ‘weirdo’ - in the 1980s Pat gained notoriety for both his eclectic taste in music and literature, and for his skill as an intelligent, pacy winger.
During an hour or two spent in a Salford studio we shared and talked about lots of new and old music, and discussed films, celebrity culture, nerves, loneliness, punditry, the World Cup and Pat’s close friendship with John Peel.
Even if you’re not a football fan, there should be something here for you.

Kojey Radical is my fourth guest on A Way From Home.
London-born multi-disciplined musician Kojey and I spent an hour or two chatting and listening to music in East London in December 2016.
We talked about identity, London, creativity and rejecting hip hop history, and about political consciousness, cross-cultural controversy, Saul Williams and Scrubs.
We shared a lot of different music, though it might make for a better listen if you don’t know what’s coming next.

This week I nip down the Northern Line to visit esteemed sonic adventurer Nick Luscombe in his flat near Waterloo. Nick and I met when we worked together at Xfm a decade or so ago, where he presented his acclaimed electronic music programme Flomotion (which now lives on Resonance). Along with a huge variety of art, music and sound-related projects, Nick’s deep, optimistic passion for discovery led to him joining the regular roster of presenters on BBC Radio 3’s flagship experimental outpost Late Junction, alongside roles as a senior music editor at iTunes and, for a time, Director of Music at London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts. He is also the founder of Musicity, an international sound project that fuses music, architecture, memory and experience.
For a man with a CV of such depth Nick would be fully entitled to parade about the place like some sort of unassailable music leviathan, but I’ve always found him to be nothing less than disarmingly polite, warmly encouraging and incredibly friendly, as he was when we spent time chatting and listening to records in his home.
We discuss the challenges of staying true to whatever passion you believe in, no matter how niche, along with talk of radio heroes, early musical passions, architecture, and the difficulties of existing and living London. Even Normski and Paul O’Grady get a nod.

This week Jon Hillcock travels down to Wimbledon to drink tea and delve into the heaving record shelves belonging to Nicole Mckenzie. Formerly head buyer/manager at one of London’s finest record shops - Sounds of the Universe in Soho - Nicole also worked as an A&R/label manager for the iconic associated Soul Jazz label, and now runs her own label, MIC, and works as a music consultant, DJ and programmer.
As you’ll hear, she has the record collection. And the best laugh.
Along with killer music by the likes of Gloria Ann Taylor, Dog Eat Dog (not that one) and releases on her MIC label from Sun Palace/Mike Collins and Lord Tusk, there’s all sorts of different stuff, including a heap of vintage dubstep, given Croydonite Nicole was right there buying in the records in at the start of the mid-noughties movement. Could a scene like that ever happen again? Is it a wrench finally leaving Sounds of the Universe behind? Is having broad taste a good or a bad thing? What do you do if you get musical burnout? Is the Motown museum in Detroit really any cop?
