#215 Should we take the devil seriously?

#215 Should we take the devil seriously?

A bit of a twist today as we answer listener's questions that have come in asking: are we meant to take Satan literally? Join Tom Wright as he unravels some of the intricate threads of the New and Old Testaments to uncover the biblical portrayal of the devil. We're looking at some of the questions and looking at biblical passages where Jesus confronts and challenges the forces of darkness, asking what role does the Devil play in affecting ministry and what power does Satan really have? Do we over-think the devil and the supernatural when we avoid heavy metal music, particular pop stars or ban Harry Potter books - where is the line between genuine caution and a kind of 'satanic panic'? What practices should we avoid that should be recognised as 'evil'? And remembering Jesus' ultimate defeat of Satan and death on the cross.
Enjoy this thought-provoking discussion that we hope sheds some light on this complex and often misunderstood (or sometimes avoided) topic of 'evil', 'satan' and 'the devil'.

#214 Is the Old Testament history or metaphor? (Replay)

Tom answers listener questions about the Old Testament. Can the truly trust the Old Testament? When was it all written? Is the Old Testament more spiritual metaphor or natural history? Yoramazing ,

Greatest theologian of our time.

I’m so happy to have been introduced to NT Wright. After having finished a Bible school in the word of faith movement I felt things were just out of focus and sometimes plain wrong.
The first book I read was the New Testament people of God. Maybe not the average starting book for most readers. But the depth pulled me in into a world I had not seen quite so clear.
Tom is extremely well spoken, has a pleasant voice, a humble heart and knows not just scripture and history, but knows God.
It is amazing to sit under this teaching.
When you can’t say something clearly, it means you don’t know the subject well enough. This is something that does not happen with Tom.

Sometimes when a question comes I think “Ha! How are you ever going to answer that. It’s too manifold, too complex, too difficult. But no. In humility and softness an answer is given that, might not be what you wanted to hear, but when pondered upon will bring light and healing.

Also a shout out to Justin who does a fantastic job in formulating the questions and hosting.

Cannot recommend this podcast enough.

Food for thought

First of all, listening to Mr Wright’s voice is my favorite stress reduction technique. He is calm and well spoken. That attribute is not easy to find in speakers who tackle difficult subjects.
I appreciate Wright’s approach to Biblical theology and find his posture to be loyal to Christ and Bible before any man made identity.
His theology is manageable for those of us with average exposure to God, the Bible or church. You don’t need to be highly academic to grasp these concepts. He meets the average Christian, or skeptic, where we are.

Very good content, challenging and appealing

Dr. Wright is willing to share his knowledge and get us to think.
