Defcon Workshops is a project run by a collective of experienced professional musicians and artists.

Our workshops cater for all age groups, genders and backgrounds.

We offer a relaxed and informal environment combining a back-to-basics, hands-on approach with traditional teaching methods.

We support and encourage young people, providing tutors they can relate to who can also offer personal guidance where required.

Through their own experience, our tutors demonstrate how easily accessible music and the arts can be to absolutely anyone. Their combined expertise and enduring enthusiasm have enabled our team to bring an alternative method of teaching techniques to a younger generation.

Our workshops utilise all of the separate tutors' skills and experience to cover everything from lyric writing and music production to DJing and drumming, as well as offering careers and business advice to take into the modern world.

New for 2009- Defcon Workshops are now producing Podcasts as part of Evidence Based Learning in association with Kdot. Enabling young people to express themselves using Radio and Podcasting techniques, and providing them with an Evaluation Podcast for their course.

Team 7 'Making Magnificent Minds' Hoarding Project

Team 7 'Making Magnificent Minds' Hoarding Project

    As part of their 12 week programme with The Princes Trust and Defcon Workshops, the young people in Team 7 from City Of Westminster College took on a unique artistic challenge;

The new College building emerging on Paddington Green has a hoarding around it. Instead of decorating it with the usual blurb and pretty pictures, the college wanted something different, something to celebrate the College and its values. So CWC approached Eine, a leading street (ie legal graffiti) artist.

Eine (Ben Flynn) has been featured in Time Out as one of the six top street artists working in Britain today. His work is all over Shoreditch/Brick Lane and has also been shown in London, Newcastle, Stockholm and Paris – and he said yes! See his work atwww.einesigns.co.uk.

This enhanced podcast shows the hard work involved in this project. It’s daring to be different, also innovative, vibrant and contemporary – all the things the young people have work hard to be. Also, because of the involvement of The Prince’s Trust Team 7 students, it’s inclusive. They are collaborating with Eine and helping to create a gigantic and memorable piece of original artwork.

The finished artwork measures 60m in length and 3m in height – making it one of the largest temporary artworks ever to appear on London’s streets.

The phrase ‘Making Magnificent Minds’ was chosen by Eine (famous for his lettering) to sum up both the College’s goals and the cutting edge design of the schmidt hammer lassen building being created behind the hoarding (and opening in 2011).

    Team 6 Evaluation Podcast

    Team 6 Evaluation Podcast

City of Westminster College’s Prince’s Trust Team Programme with Defcon Workshops was held at Lord’s Cricket Ground. Over the 12-week course the Team 6 students gained confidence and valuable workplace skills – and had fun along the way.

The group, as featured in this podcast learned practical skills such as first aid, CV writing and job interview techniques and went on a team-building residential trip. Together they tackled climbing, archery and high ropes.

A highlight of the 12 weeks was a media project for Lord’s. Team 6 were asked to make a film and podcast to showcase cricket to a younger and broader audience. Both were shown at their final presentation.

This episode features the young people from Team 6- along with the tracks they produced at the workshops.
