Things have been a little topsy-turvey for me as of late, but I still find time to read many posts and articles about geospatial technology, practices and software. So with that said we have the second episode of my ‘Bits-n-Bobs’ which allows me to share some of the things I have found interesting of late and that I wanted to share. Of course, I do this in my spare time as the Everyday Geo site is no way pays the bill… and I do it for fun and can’t discuss or review everything I have been reading! So, I hope you enjoy my take on some of the articles in this episode

In Episode 17 of the Everyday Geo podcast, we have another opportunity to learn more about a geospatial user. Xochitil Soto is a Mexican national living in San Francisco with her husband while he does software engineering for a cloud service company. She is a geographer who has done work using geospatial technologies for companies like TomTom Mexico, Thales Mexico and other contract work with various Mexican government agencies. She has also been doing various programing and front-end work using technology from Esri as well as Open Layers and other open source programs. While not currently working in the US while her husband is, she is looking for a nice GIS job or a certificate program(s) to help her on her path of becoming a GIS developer.

In Episode 16 of the Everyday Geo podcast, the first podcast interview of 2018, I get to discuss Open Source with Michael Miller. Mike is an independent contractor who has been programing and working with open source software for several years. While starting off in programing he began his move to the geospatial realm in college with the use of the technology in wildlife biology and monitoring animal movements and things took off from there. Working for a few years in the environmental field as an analyst and programmer Mike focused on how to use a combination of commercial and open source software to help those working out in the field to get the job done. The author of a few open source course on Udemy, Mike continues his work with open source software in the hopes of working with non-profit organizations and groups that just can’t afford the higher end costs of commercial geospatial technologies.

With a new year, comes new things. In 2018, the Everyday Geo site is experimenting with new things of interest for professional, as well as new, users of geospatial technology. These ‘bits and bobs’ of information will come from various web sources, videos, podcasts, blogs, etc. These podcasts are meant to share with other users’ things of interest in the industry that caught my attention. A short explanation that can be listened to while in the office, in the car, out on a walk or working out. References to all discussed information is also provided on the podcast web page in case you want to learn more.
