The Dutch Delta, with the port of Rotterdam as its center, has benefited from its natural position as the mouth of the rivers Maas and Rijn for hundreds of years. This geographic situation also puts it at risk from sea level rise, flooding, and changing rain water patterns. It has been the busiest port in the world for more than half a century. It is home to industry, trade and densely populated areas. The Delta is also suffering from this success: economic growth has gone hand in hand with pollution, dispossession and inequality. In this podcast series, we start walking from the North Sea shore toward the economic, political and academic center of the Delta: Rotterdam. On our way, we collect stories, sounds, experiences from the locality and connect them to expert opinions asking: How can we keep living safe, healthy, and happy lives in an area that faces consequences of past, current and future maritime uses and challenges?

Leveraging the Past for Better Futures

In this final episode, Matteo D’Agostino interviews Eddy Moors, Director of the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education and Observer at the Netherlands National Committee for the Intergovernmental Hydrological Program of UNESCO. Eddy stresses the need for considering the past and holistic ways to look beyond mitigation of - and adaptation to - changing water patterns towards context-sensitive and water-saving solutions. His message is to shift away from top-down approaches and work together in creating and implementing sustainable solutions that address multiple values.

Fairmount Water Works and its Water Stories

Welcome to the first episode of the podcast for the online course Water Systems Design: Learning from the Past for Resilient Water Futures!

Through the “power of place,” water systems can be repurposed by leveraging heritage.

In this first episode, Carlien Donkor interviews Ellen Schultz, Director for Strategic Partnerships, about her work at the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center, housed in a historical pumping station.
