EP 33: Dissecting Democracy (Ft. Bree Newsome)

EP 33: Dissecting Democracy (Ft. Bree Newsome)

Our democracy is on the brink, and the upcoming 2024 election is a clear illustration of the authoritarian choices we face as voters. Activist and mother, Bree Newsome, joins us for a riveting conversation that cuts through the surface and exposes the real issues plaguing our politics. We confront the white supremacist underbelly that is damaging our democracy and the dearth of debate within the Democratic Party on crucial issues.

Saddling up for a deep dive, we decipher democracy's complexities and the global impacts of such a system touching upon conflicts in Israel-Palestine and Ukraine-Russia. The subtle danger of blind allegiance to political figures is not lost on us as we emphasize the importance of holding leaders accountable. We also unravel the Democratic Party's lost connection with key voting blocks and the actions needed to regain these important segments.

In the final leg of this journey, we shift focus to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict's perceptions across different generations, climate change, and the fight for universal human rights. Bree shares her unique perspective of freedom as a concept and the process of breathing life into our visions. We round off with a discussion on the importance of local politics, the need for new political parties, and the urgency of handing the reins over to the next generation. Let's envision a better future where different generations unite for freedom - join us as we redefine politics.

EP 32: Learning Big Organizing from Rustin

EP 32: Learning Big Organizing from Rustin

Ever wondered how Bayard Rustin, a key figure in the civil rights movement, managed to organize one of history's most significant protests, the March on Washington? Why did he believe so fervently in the abolition of violence and normalization of conflict? Today we're going on a journey through Rustin's life and lessons as portrayed in the upcoming Netflix movie, Rustin, with the brilliant actor, Coleman Domingo as Bayard Rustin. I'll share my encounter with Coleman and how his embodiment of Rustin made it feel as though I was meeting the legend himself.

Now, imagine being able to handle conflict at three different levels, with the finesse and grace that Rustin did. We're going to delve into that and more, discussing theories of change, and how we can apply them to transform our communities. We'll shine a light on Rustin's genius in creating an environment of trust and the essential skills required to manage conflict without police intervention or bureaucracy.

We'll also take a page out of Rustin's book on how to build coalitions for activism by fostering a shared vision and inclusive stakeholder participation. Drawing from my own experiences, we'll exemplify the strength of relationships and partnerships. Ending off with an homage to Rustin's audacious spirit and resilience, today's episode promises to leave you with a richer understanding of this remarkable man and our shared history. So buckle up and let's take this enlightening ride together.
