The different roles of competition in ATM and UTM

The different roles of competition in ATM and UTM

UTM introduces the possibility to exchange data in a safe, sustainable and automated way, argues Marcel Kägi, co-leader of the Innovation and Digitalization Unit of FOCA and policy and regulation expert: And we try to figure out what regulatory approaches will enable this at scale.

In this episode, Marcel joins Lorenzo Murzilli to share his thoughts about how UTM could change how we think about air traffic management (ATM) in the future. As we all know, ATM is a natural monopoly: It is more efficient to have one single service provider in one volume of airspace than having several. UTM will likely change this. The podcast will dive deeper into this disruptive paradigm shift.

    Smart Swiss spraying applications

Over the past two years, the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) authorized an increased number and type of spraying operations. Nathanel Apter, new technology engineer at FOCA's innovation and digitalization unit, joins Lorenzo Murzilli to explain why. Spraying applications, Nathanel argues, are shaping the way for a new future: Let’s think, for example, of new creative market opportunities, smooth regulatory procedures, increased safety of human-centric work, and technological developments with regards to automation.

Network Remote ID - 5 key facts to remember

Network Remote ID - 5 key facts to remember

“You always have two ways of implementing a new technology,” says Benoit Curdy, digital transformation architect in FOCA’s Innovation and Digitalisation Unit. “You can either wait for it to become legal or you can start early, learn with the industry, learn with the operators and based on that, inform the regulatory process. And that's what we are doing with Remote ID.”

Join Lorenzo Murzilli, co-leader of the section, who talks to Benoit Curdy about the implementation of Remote ID (RID) in Switzerland. Even though this service is to be provided voluntarily, it is a necessary step in integrating UASs into airspaces by increasing awareness of the UASs flying in an airspace. It will not only assist the authorities and security agencies to carry out their duties with respect to UAS operations, but also assist the public by increasing transparency, overview and accountability.
