    Pitching Versus Presenting

    Pitching Versus Presenting

‘Ultimately when you are pitching you are creating a need or desire’

In this podcast, Toni, in response to a question from her community, looks at the difference between a presentation and a pitch.

Presentations can come in many different formats and a pitch should have a clearly defined call to action. Starting with the end in mind is vital if you want to be sure whether it’s a pitch or presentation that you should be doing to achieve your desired outcome.

A good salesperson can begin with a presentation and then move to a pitch providing solutions to problems you didn’t even know you had.

Listen in to find out how you can understand the differences and ensure you’re your presentations and pitches secure your desired outcome.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    Presenting
The process of presenting a topic to an audience typically a demonstration, an introduction, lecture or speech A pitch is meant to inform, persuade, inspire,  motivate or build goodwill.
A presentation may be used to showcase information and you share the content required.

    Pitching
The focus in pitching is usually around sales or selling
It is a line of talk that attempts to persuade someone with a planned presentation it’s designed to be either an introduction to a product or service or expands on the description of the product and is designed to achieve sales of the product or service.

    The difference
The main difference is presenting is informing and pitching is selling.
When you give a presentation, you are sharing facts and information, when pitching you are still sharing information but there is an end goal – to sell something
Start with the end in mind what is the desired outcome?
Do you want people to enjoy listening and learning something?
Do you want people to need what you have been talking about?
When you are creating a call to action it has to be clear, it has to be something people understand.
Make sure it’s concise if people know with clarity and in a really simplistic way what they need to do to achieve the desired result they are more likely to take action.
Make it simple, keep it brief and make it clear.
Ultimately when you are pitching you are creating a need or desire.
Always start with the end in mind and if you create a need,  you can elegantly merge your presentation into a pitch.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Presentations can come in many different formats’

‘They need to know exactly what to do to get the product or service’

‘He provided solutions to problems I didn’t even know I had’

‘You need to pitch so well that by the end of the presentation they feel they really need to have the product or service’

    Energy Management

    Energy Management

‘There are so many ways that you, as the speaker, can control the energy in the room

You need to take the hand of the audience and lead them in the direction you would like them to go’

In this episode, Toni shares her response to the question ‘How do you take a room and bring them up in energy ?’

She explains how as the speaker you can not only manage audience energy but change it throughout a speech or presentation to increase impact and the emotional experience of your audience.

If you have ever been to a presentation where the energy it too much or experienced the speaker who has no energy? then listen in and find out how as the speaker you can bring the right level of energy to your presentation.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS
You must gauge and meet the audience where they are at when you enter the room and then move the energy to bring your audience to where you want them to be.
It’s about being conscious and aware of where your audience is but not allowing the energy of the room to impact on you.
Before you’ve started your speech you need to identify the energy within the room. Do this by listening and being part of the room before you speak
The way in which you visually appear and audibly begin can capture the attention of the audience.
The way you dress and the props you use will impact on the energy and mood in the room
When you want to lower the energy within the room to create a more intimate mood or connection lowering your volume and using a softer tone can achieve this effect
Altering your tone, volume and pace can alter the energy in the room and bring the audience to the level of energy you want.
One of the most poignant ways you can achieve a connection is through silence.
If you can master the art of the pause it can really help you to connect with the audience.
Movement can help you to connect to your audience and motion creates emotion.
Your movement influences the mood of the audience taking a seat and pausing following a walk around creates a connection point with your audience.
By amending your position, pose and tone you can create the emotion in the room and in turn affect the energy
Before you alter the energy in the room its important you understand your own energy
We focus on the energy in the room but the audience will feed off your energy so it’s vital to manage your own energy before you step onto the stage.
Identify your own energy, use it as your starting pint and be conscious of the energy you want to convey to the audience.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘The worst thing you can do is come in with the energy you would like them to have when they are not already there’

‘If your audience is timid and tame it can affect your energy as the speaker. So, it is vital you manage your own energy’

‘The element of surprise will alter the mood in the room’

Can An Introvert Be A Public Speaker?

Can An Introvert Be A Public Speaker?

In today’s episode, Toni asks the thought-provoking question, can an introvert be a public speaker?

It’s a common misconception that in order to be a good speaker in public, you have to be extroverted, but that isn’t the case. Listen on to find out why...

    KEY TAKEAWAYS
Extroverts are outgoing, socially confident, they get involved, and they like to talk. Introverts are seen as shy and socially awkward.

Winston Churchill, Barack Obama and Abraham Lincoln are among the greatest speakers of all time. But they were also self-professed introverts.

Introverts spend much time alone, which actually serves them well in terms of time for research, writing, prepare and refine and practice.

The audience wants you to succeed. Even if you look a little nervous this can sometimes work to your advantage, because people will will you to succeed.

If you’re an introvert, it makes you hyper self-aware, and this can only be a good thing when you’re a speaker. You’ll more than likely feel more connected to your audience

    BEST MOMENTS
‘Speaking is not an act of extroversion’
‘An introvert looks inside to draw their energy’
‘People buy into you because they can see your authenticity’
‘Martin Luther King and Mother Teresa had the ability to listen to their audience’
‘Remember, the audience wants you to succeed. It’s in their interests and yours’

    The Non-Speaker Side Of Speaking

    The Non-Speaker Side Of Speaking

Believe it or not, there’s more to public speaking than the speech itself. What about the dozens of other things in our lives that can affect how we think, how we perform, and of course, how we speak on the day?

In this episode, Toni gives you a concise and practical guide to dealing with the non-speaker side of public speaking, from sleeping properly to creating emotion through motion.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS
Sleep - It’s imperative to get enough sleep before any kind of engagement. How can you expect to deal with a room full of listeners with whom you may need to interact and stimulate, if your mind isn’t firing on all cylinders?

Keep hydrated - It might seem like a small thing, but a lack of hydration can affect your delivery, which can cascade down into other issues. If you’re focussing on the way it’s affecting your speech, your performance will suffer.

Getting in state - The practice of preparing yourself mentally and physically for your presentation, whether by a personal ritual or a certain routine you adhere to. Get yourself into the zone.

Motion - Motion creates emotion. Moving on stage increases the energy between you and your audience, but it’s also the case in terms of preparation. Don’t be lethargic before a presentation. Get the blood pumping, because that energy will transfer.

Create those habits - Combine all your own tactics to create your habits, your routine, and use it to keep you on top form.

    BEST MOMENTS
‘It’s important that you know your own body, and know what you need’
‘You’ve got to be fully present, both in mind and body’
    ‘Motion creates emotion'
’Normal is what we do, not what we are'
