The disparities between men and women’s treatment throughout the criminal justice system, from arrest to sentencing to release, highlight the greater effects of mass incarceration, the anti-drug movement of the late 20th century. While the debate rages on about whether or not women’s prisons truly need reform, I argue that they do. Due to the clear fact that the prison system was originally designed for men, the needs of female inmates has been overlooked since the first prisons were founded.
