3336 - Bidens BFD On Israel & Trump's Sock Puppet w/ Ryan Grim

3336 - Bidens BFD On Israel & Trump's Sock Puppet w/ Ryan Grim

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma speak with Ryan Grim, D.C. Bureau Chief at The Intercept and co-host of Counter Points, to round up the week in news. First, Sam and Emma react to some of the new developments in Trump's hush money trial, including the appearance of...someone different to advocate for Trump outside the courthouse: Florida Sen. Rick Scott. The MR Crew, and reporters speaking to Sen. Scott, speculate that, due to Trump's gag order, Trump may be calling in some surrogates who are less...inhibited than Trump is at the moment. Then, after not being able to figure out his laptop, Ryan Grim joins the program by phone, and he, Sam, and Emma start off by recapping the calamitous end of Kristi Noem's book tour, with the last stop on Stuart Varney's Fox Business show looking like the breaking point. They then discuss how AIPAC has been slightly neutralized in the election cycle this year, and, per Ryan's reporting and analysis, the fear some in the organization are feeling that they don't possess the same sway over Biden given his decision to withhold some aid to Israel over the prospect of a Rafah invasion, AND that they haven't been as impactful or decisive in Democratic primaries, specifically against Squad members. Ryan outlines some of the equivocating that Bidenworld has done after Biden's comments on withholding aid, and Grim zeroes in on the cleavage between the Biden administration officials responsible for military and intelligence actions (Defense Secretary Austin & CIA Director Burns) who are in negotiations with Israel & Palestine, compared to that of the diplomatic and political actors (Secretary of State Blinken & Biden's Chief of Staff Jeff Zients) who have been much more deferential both publicly and privately towards Israel. They then discuss the terrible implications for the U.S., Palestinians, and even Israeli soldiers in terms of casualties and damage if a large scale ground invasion of Rafah occurs, and how, even if Biden and Netanyahu may understand those implications, they may be too involved ideologically to try and put a real stop to it. Grim then updates Sam and Emma on some of the other AIPAC machinations going on, including their infusion in an Oregon congressional primary to stop Rep. Pramila Jayapal's sister, Susheela, from winning. They then finally discuss what political implications this may have for President Biden in November, and how, if voters who would actually be championing Biden (activists, politically engaged young voters) weren't so disgusted with Biden's conduct in Israel, they'd be endorsing and highlighting some serious policy victories that Biden's engaged in (banning natural gas export terminals, for example). Instead, the connotation with Biden due to his support of Israel is inevitably clouded for some in his key voter bases.
And in the Fun Half, Sam, Emma, and Bradley react to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu speaking with Dr. Phil in Jerusalem (???) about how Israel will fight even with his fingernails if they have (and, Netanyahu qualifies, that they do have more to fight with than fingernails. Thanks for clarifying!) Afterwards, they take a look at Israel's UN representative, Gilad Erdan, getting in some prop work at the General Assembly meeting, claiming that the body is shredding its charter by admitting Palestine into the body further with more privileges (he literally shredded a tiny copy of the UN charter.) They then react to some of the right wing fearmongering over anti-Semitism (something they've always really cared about, seemingly), with Florida Rep. Aaron Bean warning a House subcommittee that...2nd graders are trafficking in Nazi propaganda. Then the MR Crew gets through the jump scare of watching Katie Britt talk (hasn't gotten over the State of the Union response cadence, seemingly) about Jewish college students being treated like civil rights activists in the 1960's, Trump's appeal to Jewish voters outside the courthouse (they should be ashamed o

3335 - Guatemala’s Stolen Children; Sudan’s Year Of Wartime Horrors w/ Rachel Nolan, Raga Makawi

3335 - Guatemala’s Stolen Children; Sudan’s Year Of Wartime Horrors w/ Rachel Nolan, Raga Makawi

It’s an EmMajority Report Thursday! It’s an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Rachel Nolan, historian of Latin America at Boston University’s Pardee School of Global Studies, to discuss her recent book Until I Find You: Disappeared Children and Coercive Adoptions in Guatemala. Then, she speaks with Raga Makawi, editor at African Arguments, to discuss the ongoing conflict in Sudan. First, Emma discusses President Biden's recent CNN interview with Erin Burnett, where he makes the claim that he'd withhold aid to Israel if a full-scale invasion into Rafah occurs. This led to some predictably normal responses from Prime Minister Netanyahu reposting a video of himself speaking about Israel acting alone if it needs to, and National Security Minister Ben-Gvir tweeting out that Hamas loves Biden. Rachel Nolan then joins the program to discuss her book on the crisis of the disappeared children in Guatemala, and how little media coverage and understanding is attached to this subject. All of this in the backdrop of a severe and violent sectarian conflict within the country, which led to the conditions from which disappearances and the for-profit adoption boom out of Central and South America began to increase and expand. Rachel dives into the number of organizations that have participated in the adoption racket out of Guatemala, the erasure of birth parents stories when it comes to understanding the "adoption triad" (birth parents, adoptee, & adopted parents), the idea of the "white savior" complex and how that intersects with these types of adoptions/dismissals of indigenous communities both domestically in the U.S. and abroad, as well as how, if at all, Trump's family separation policies impacted this industry. Raga Makawi then joins the program to provide some additional context to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has now surpassed a year of fighting. Raga outlines the central players, including the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the Sudanese government and military, and how both sides staked their positions in the conflict not only over the past year, but stemming back to the 2018 revolution as well as the 2004 conflict in Darfur. Raga also emphasizes the serious famine concerns in the area as a result of this conflict, who some other external players are geopolitically (Iran, as an example), how economic extraction and plunder from outside forces factor into the conflict itself, and what Western audiences don't understand about the conflict due to lack of media coverage/literacy on the issues germane to the situation.
And in the Fun Half, Emma, Matt Binder, Brandon Sutton, & the entire MR Crew react to Likud Knesset member Tali Gottlieb melting down over Biden's pledge to not provide aid to Israel if their forces invade Rafah, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene taking on the "uniparty" by filing the motion to vacate against Speaker Johnson, "social entrepreneur" Chris Pan's cringeworthy BitCoin-themed commencement address/magic show at Ohio State University, Elise Stefanik attempting another witchhunt in a congressional subcommittee hearing, this time directed at the Chancellor of New York City Public Schools, and the inevitable Vivek Ramaswamy-Ann Coulter meeting of the minds on Vivek's "TRUTH" podcast, where...Ann Coulter tells him she couldn't vote for him for President because he's Indian (Vivek appreciated the candor!). 3334 - Big Ag’s Cali Assault on Labor & Princeton Hunger Strikers

3334 - Big Ag’s Cali Assault on Labor & Princeton Hunger Strikers

It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with David Bacon, journalist and photographer focusing on labor issues, to discuss his recent piece in the Nation entitled "Big Ag’s Latest Blow to Workers' Rights." Then, they speak with 2 members of the Princeton University Gaza Solidarity Encampment, who are currently on a hunger strike in opposition to Israel's offensive in Gaza. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on US arms shipments to Israel, Biden’s Leahy Law report, the House GOP’s threat to the ICC, Trump’s legal woes, the global wave of pro-Palestinian student activism, climate change, Utah’s anti-trans tip line, and Robert Kennedy Jr’s brain worms, before parsing through Fox News’ odd yet unsurprising take on Stormy Daniel’s testimony. David Bacon then joins, diving right into California’s AB-2183, an agricultural labor law bolstering workers’ right to unionize with an effective card check system, contextualizing it within the ongoing labor renaissance in the US alongside a renewed NLRB, and the important role laws like this (and similar ones as seen in New York) play in restoring the balance in labor relations. Bacon then walks Sam and Emma through the ongoing legal battle against the constitutionality of AB-2183, first exploring the disputed United Farm Workers Union election that pushed the Wonderful Company’s case, before looking into the simultaneous dubious nature of the case and unfortunate likelihood that an eventual Supreme Court decision could still result in the overturning of the law (or worse). Wrapping up, David tackles the immense resources behind the Wonderful Company’s campaign, and California’s major role in shaping national labor relations. Next, David and Rosangela join from Princeton’s Gaza Solidarity Encampment, as they parse through the intense and severe administrative backlash to campus anti-war and pro-divestment activism that pushed them and other activists to a hunger strike, before taking Sam and Emma through the list of demands the activists are presenting the school, including financial transparency, relations to Israeli and Palestinian institutions, and dropping legal charges against student activists. After expanding on the school administration’s consistent bad-faith treatment of the student activists, David and Rosangela walk through the incredible support both the encampment and hunger strike have gotten from the local and University communities, and how organizers have managed to keep the message on track as administrators continue to misrepresent their effort.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch a very Harvard protest, unpack Biden’s recent claim that Hamas is acting on an “ancient desire” to kill Jews, and talk with Mitch Folay in NC about the recent expansion of Jewish Voice for Peace to Charlotte and the administrative backlash to anti-war protests at UNC. Piers Morgan remembers how to do journalism, Obi from Ashville explores using fiscal policy to expand access to housing, and Chris from New York asks about pulling a friend out of the Q Anon rabbit hole. Tim Pool continues to struggle with both genocide-grifting and self-confidence, and Steve Bannon grapples with Trump reaffirming his support for Mike Johnson, plus, your calls and IM!

3333 - Israel Rejects Peace; Good Social Security News, & Audits Coming For The Rich

3333 - Israel Rejects Peace; Good Social Security News, & Audits Coming For The Rich

It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel’s advance on Rafah in the wake of Hamas accepting a ceasefire deal proposed by the US, the testimony of Stormy Daniels, Social Security, Boeing, Biden’s support for Israel, Trump’s legal woes, inter-state abortion immigration, the RNC, and MTG, before watching Brian Kilmeade attempt to spin Trump’s ongoing trials into victories for Trump’s enterprise. Next, they parse through the recent story around Hamas accepting a ceasefire-for-hostages deal, only for Israel to immediately turn around and kill the agreement as they moved forward with their invasion of Rafah, closing down Rafah crossing, demanding evacuation (from the last haven in Palestine), and separating families, in a desperate push to complete this ethnic cleansing. Sam and Emma look at the recent “warning” letter sent to the International Criminal Court by 12 GOP Senators (from McConnell to Cruz) threatening retaliation and worse if the ICC continues with its plan to issue arrest warrants for Bibi Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant, and tackle Biden’s impending deadline to prove Israel’s compliance with humanitarian law following the Leahy Law as they explore how the US’ unwavering support for this genocide has only further weakened the international “rules-based” order that Biden supposedly sought to restore. After walking through the recent reports on the promising future of Social Security and Medicaid, and the importance of expanded IRS capacity, Sam and Emma wrap up the free half with a deep dive into the recent revelations around Henry Cuellar’s corruption, and what that means for Democratic Party leadership’s support for his reelection.

And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the controversy around Kristi Noem undertaking a typical matriarchal task (slaughtering the family puppy), Bernadette from New England dives into the classism ingrained in the US Healthcare system, and Osama from North Carolina asks about Egypt’s potential in conflict with Israel. George Santos catches Nick Fuentes with a gotcha that could only stump a homophobic fascist, the right has a new solution for social alienation (a bogus male supplement), and Dan from Texas explores term limits for SCOTUS Justices. Clay from Minnesota discusses the administrative backlash to anti-war activism at Carleton College, plus, your calls and IMs!

3332 - 2020: The Year Everything Changed w/ Eric Klinenberg

3332 - 2020: The Year Everything Changed w/ Eric Klinenberg

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Eric Klinenberg, professor in social science and Director of the Institute for Public Knowledge at New York University, to discuss his recent book 2020: One City, Seven People, and the Year Everything Changed.  First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel’s staunch refusal to stop the bloodshed in Gaza, a tentative hold on US ammo to Israel, famine in Gaza, Missouri abortion rights, starvation in Sudan, US labor law, the downfall of Henry Cuellar, and Utah’s new tip line for anonymous genital reports. Professor Eric Klinenberg then joins, as he, Sam, and Emma preface the conversation with the idea of “natural disasters” largely being a function of society’s capacity to deal with natural phenomena, with “2020” looking at what the crises under COVID revealed about the incredibly precarious, fractured, and individualist society of the United States. Expanding on this, Professor Klinenberg tackles the ethnographic nature of this work, and the overwhelming nature of the trauma suffered by the public during the pandemic, something also seen during the Spanish Flu epidemic in the early 20th Century. After further contextualizing the United State’s role as an outlier in many regards when it came to the COVID-19 pandemic, including its supposedly elite levels of preparedness and its disproportionate failure in preventing deaths, Eric walks Sam and Emma through the unique failure that faced the US in the form of a complete abdication of leadership from the federal government – led (at the time) by the Trump Administration – in favor of extreme politicization, nihilism, and polarization at a time where social solidarity was of the utmost importance. Klinenberg looks at the glimmers of hope found throughout these crises, and how the government quickly stamped them out, before exploring the Biden Administration’s particular role in refusing to acknowledge or address the continuing effects of these crises, and the US’ ever-precarious footing heading into the 2024 election.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch as Mitt Romney lets the connection between Israel and the TikTok ban slip, and Alan Dershowitz offers to go to legal defense for the ultimate victims of anti-semitism: Christian Zionists. Ole Miss frat boys show up for apartheid, Kristi Noem objects to another fake-news narrative picked up from her autobiography, and Marjorie Taylor Greene just wants to be clear about who’s responsible for Jesus’ death. Jerry Seinfeld finally breaks through the shackles of Big Woke in his newest release "Unfrosted: the Pop-Tart Story", plus, your calls and IMs!

    3331 - Propaganda, Protest, & Politics w/ Mehdi Hasan

It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma speak with Mehdi Hasan, founder, CEO, and editor-in-chief of the new media company Zeteo, to discuss the biggest stories of the week and his new venture. First, Sam & Emma check in on Trump's trial, where people are concerned about how he keeps falling asleep. But that doesn't matter to South Carolina diner patrons* (*Ainsley Earhardt's friends and family), including former South Carolina State Rep. Chip Huggins, who thinks Trump is being crucified in court. It also doesn't apply to NewsMax's Carl Higbie, who is ecstatic to see how much energy Trump is showing by taking a car from lower Manhattan to Trump Tower on 5th Avenue. Then Mehdi joins Sam and Emma, and they discuss how the propaganda in support of Israel appearing on news and social media is the greatest since the entire media machine threw itself behind the Iraq War in the early 2000's. They discuss President Biden's reactions to the campus protests, the weaponization of the word "democracy", the baffling decision by Senate Majority Leader Schumer to reportedly partner with Speaker Johnson to invite Netanyahu to address Congress, and also check out Sen. Bernie Sanders explaining why Israel may end up being President Biden's own version of Vietnam.
And in the Fun Half, the MR Crew check out Joe Rogan decrying out of control wokeness infiltrating college campuses, a respected Dartmouth history professor, Annelise Orleck, being forcibly arrested by police at a campus protest, Mehdi Hasan expertly dressing down Piers Morgan in a debate over the usage of the word "Intifada", and Donald Trump pretending like he doesn't know who RFK Jr. is when asked about him, even though they met at Trump Tower in 2016, and Trump is worried he's going to siphon votes away from him in November. Plus, your calls & IM's!
