#795 How Gary Kusin Created GameStop

I remember when my kids were growing up, my youngest son Daniel visited Gamestop the day it opened up near our home. He said that now since we were so close to Gamestop, our home would be more valuable. I am not sure about that but certainly GameStop has had a big effect on the gaming industry and the stock market.

Gary Kusin, co-founded two companies, Babbage’s, operating today as GameStop (NYSE: GME), and Laura Mercier Cosmetics. He served from 2001-2006 as President and Chief Executive Officer of Kinko’s, today operating as FedEx Office. He was responsible for the turnaround, strategic growth and transformation of Kinko’s and oversaw the ultimate sale to FedEx, directly reporting to Fred Smith, founder of FedEx, for the 2 years required to integrate Kinko’s into FedEx and be renamed FedEx Office.

#794 Why People are the Hardest (and Most Rewarding) Part of Small Business

Segment 1 with Lisa Ealy starting at 0:00

Here is the hard truth; at the core of every thriving business are its people. But managing and leading people are also the hardest part of the business…and quite honestly one of the top reasons entrepreneurs sell their companies- the people wear them out!

Lisa Ealy is the CEO and Founder of Purple Squirrel Group and HR For Profit.

Segment 2 with Matt Gardner starting at 14:22

Managing the finances of a small business for many people is a very part of their job. They were never taught how to manage money and probably don’t even balance their own check book. As a small business owner, how do you figure out the help you need inside and outside your company so you have the information you need to manage your company?

Matt Gardner is the CEO and Co-Founder of Hiline, a leading financial services firm that delivers scalable accounting, human resources, tax, and payroll services to growth-minded companies, small and midsize businesses, and non-profits. He is a Certified Public Accountant and earned his BS in Accounting from SUNY Oswego. #793 Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy on Profiles in Mental Health Courage

#793 Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy on Profiles in Mental Health Courage

Segment 1 with former Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy starts at 0:00

I have many times talked and written about my struggle with depression and anxiety over the past 40 years. How it affected me, my family and my businesses- and we have featured other people over the last 15 who have had the courage to combat a similar struggle which is all too common among entrepreneurs and small business owners.

Remembering that President John F. Kennedy, published his classic book Profiles in Courage, he hoped to inspire “political courage” by telling the stories of brave U.S. senators who changed America. In PROFILES IN MENTAL HEALTH COURAGE, Former congressman Patrick Kennedy adapts his uncle’s idea to showcase the acts of “mental health courage” that happen in private: what it takes for those living with mental illness and addiction to find care and treat their illnesses, and the risk they take telling their stories in a country without adequate mental health understanding, infrastructure, and care. Patrick Kennedy is one of the leading voices on mental illness while he was in Congress. Soon after the death of his father, Senator Ted Kennedy he left congress to devote himself to mental health Advocacy.

Segment 2 with Robert and Brian Moran starts at 14:12

We are continuing our discussion on the challenges of mental health. A year back, I listen to a podcast called: "I Didn't Ask for This” where a father and son cover mental illness from all angles- primarily from their own experiences. I thought it would be perfect to have them on the show today. Brian Moran was the Executive Director of Sales Development at the Wall Street Journal where he oversaw the sales development and marketing programs for the financial and small business categories among the many Journal brands. Now of course he is a small business expert that runs Small Business Edge. Robert Moran is their marketing manager.

A must listen episode for every small business owner and entrepreneur that struggles with depression, anxiety and some kind of addiction.

#792 Pedaling into the Unknown: Exploring the Culture of Cycling

#792 Pedaling into the Unknown: Exploring the Culture of Cycling

Let me be upfront. This show has nothing to do with small business but everything to do with my other love: cycling.

The Pandemic Bike Boom led to over 54 million American bike riders pushed cities across the country to focus on new bike lanes and bike safety! The bicycle is one of the greatest inventions in human history. It can literally transport you to places you want to go—to your school or office, to the summit of a local hilltop, to some objective in your pursuit of fitness—but it can do more than that. A bicycle can also transport you to an entirely different mindset, a place where you can embrace the unexpected and live in the moment.   People are drawn to riding for many of the same reasons—to test themselves, find themselves, and express themselves. To find some peace and beauty. To inject fun and adventure into their busy lives.

I interview former Editor of Bicycling Magazine, Peter Flax, who is the author of "Live to Ride: Finding Joy and Meaning on a Bicycle". He explains the allure of cycling and why it is so important to our community (and how to protect it).
