I'm currently a graduate student at the University of Rochester getting my PhD in Brain and Cognitive Science. I study the brain, and have a passion talking to others about the many different ways psychology impacts our daily life. While I consider myself a cognitive scientist, this podcast will cover broad areas; including clinical, behavioral, and computational psychology as well as mindfulness and mental health. This means that anyone can join in on our journey on using our brains to think about our brains.

Episode 1: "You're Not Listening" by Kate Murphy

Welcome to the first episode! Today we'll be discussing the book You're Not Listening by Kate Murphy. The book covers how each of us are conditioned to be bad listeners. In today’s society, we’re constantly bombarded with information, and a lot of time our success depends on how much of that information can be absorbed. Sometimes, when the information doesn’t come fast enough or seems irrelevant to our interests, we skip or scroll through the article. However, we can’t scroll through our friends, family, and colleagues. The art of listening comes down to the gift of giving your full attention to someone – no matter the speed or relevance. The book goes on to describe the many benefits of mindfully listening, to both the listener as well as the person being listened to.
