Small shell companies have long been used by money launderers and other criminal actors to hide the source of illegally obtained funds and to shield their identities. The CTA became effective January 1, 2024, allowing the IRS’ Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) to collect information on beneficial owners of certain legal entities.
