The 64-minute, fourteen-song Up was R.E.M.'s first record following the departure of original drummer Bill Berry. Though it could have arguably benefited from more thoughtful sequencing and a shorter run time, it did find the band exploring new sonic terrain by channeling influences like Patti Smith and The Beach Boys.
