In deze Nederlandstalige aflevering koos Cynthia McLeod voor 'Gone with the Wind' van Margaret Mitchell als het boek van haar leven. Een tijdloze klassieker die generaties lezers heeft weten te raken. Book of my Life: Alejandra Ortiz about 'We the Living' by Ayn Rand

Wat zullen ze zeggen, Meltem? #2 – Meral Polat- actrice, theatermaakster en zangeres

In aflevering 2 van 'Wat zullen ze zeggen, Meltem?' gaat Meltem Halaceli in gesprek met actrice, theatermaakster en zangeres Meral Polat over de feministische waarden die zij heeft meegekregen van haar ouders. Haar vader was een feminist en speelde een grote rol in haar opvoeding en beroepskeuze. In dit interview vertelt Meral wat haar vader mee heeft gemaakt in zijn jeugd en hoe de onderdrukking die hij ervaarde als koerdische jongen van invloed waren op zijn latere levenshouding. Haar vader doorbrak traditionele patronen en gaf Meral net zo veel vrijheid als haar broertje. Recent vond ze zijn schriften volgeschreven met gedichten over migratie, liefde en het leven. Ze bewerkte die gedichten tot liederen en slaat daarmee een nieuwe pad in. In de podcast Wat zullen ze zeggen, Meltem? gaat Meltem Halaceli op zoek naar het verhaal achter gendergerelateerd geweld. A Short Guide to Meat with Ruth Ozeki

Listen to our podcast A Short Guide to Meat, in which Winternachten programme maker Joëlle Koorneef talks to Ruth Ozeki, the Japanese-American author who has written about meat like no other. My Year of Meats (1998) is a humorous but very critical novel about, among other things, the meat industry. It was a true sensation. In the book, a raw comparison is made between woman and meat, with two plotlines that are slowly woven together. Thinking about the objectification, sexualization, and consumption of both meat and women's bodies comes together in this novel. This podcast will help you navigate through the program ‘Meat:Woman’ on the 16th of June 2022 during the Dutch literary festival Winternachten 2022. Ruth Ozeki’s novel My Year of Meats was a major inspiration in thinking about connections between meat and women. In this podcast episode, we hear from Ruth Ozeki how she gained inspiration for My Year of Meats as a TV producer and through her work on gory horror film sets. Further, Ozeki reflects on questions such as: What role does activism have in literature? And how does the writer look back on her venture into meat over 20 years later, quite a few steps further into the vegetarian revolution? Ozeki is not attending our festival, but her work was a great inspiration for one of the festival programs this year. Wat zullen ze zeggen, Meltem? #1 | Bertil Emrah Oder en mijn moeder

In de podcast Wat zullen ze zeggen, Meltem? gaat Meltem Halaceli op zoek naar het verhaal achter gendergerelateerd geweld. In Turkije, het land waar haar ouders vandaan komen, maar ook in de rest van de wereld neemt geweld tegen vrouwen en moord op vrouwen toe. Tegen deze achtergrond gaat Wat zullen ze zeggen, Meltem? in drie afleveringen dieper in op feminisme, literatuur en de toenemende druk op fundamentele vrouwenrechten. In aflevering 1 van Wat zullen ze zeggen, Meltem? gaat Meltem Halaceli in gesprek met haar eigen moeder, die in Turkije de roerige jaren 70 en 80 meemaakte. De feministische beweging heeft haar gevormd, en op haar beurt is Meltem weer sterk gevormd door de feministische ideeën van haar moeder. Ook komt de geschiedenis van de Turkse vrouwenbeweging aan bod, in een gesprek met Bertil Emrah Oder, decaan rechtsgeleerdheid aan de Koç Universiteit in Istanbul. The Asterisk Conversations #2 | Simon(e) van Saarloos, Pamela Sneed, Jolyn Phillips

In the second Writers Unlimited podcast, philosopher and writer Simon(e) van Saarloos invites the New York-based poet, performer, visual artist, and educator Pamela Sneed for an Asterisk conversation – “een sterretjesgesprek”. Asterik conversations expand and overlap, trusting that different themes and threads interweave and cross, influencing each other. The asterisk resists the idea of core business, of a single issue struggle (Audre Lorde) or truth with a capital T. As Jack Halberstam writes in Trans*: the asterisk refuses to “situate transition in relation to destination, a final form, a specific shape, or an established configuration of desire and identity”. The Asterisk Conversations features each episode a writer overseas and invites a maker based in The Netherlands to create a new work in response. This way, each podcast ends with the beginning of a new conversation. And this time it was very obvious that we should invite Jolyn Phillips to respond. Jolyn is a writer, poet, composer, singer and activist. Her 2016 debut collection of short stories, Tjieng Tjang Tjerries, received critical praise, was shortlisted for the University of Johannesburg Prize for best debut, and won the NIHSS Prize for best fiction. Phillips herself adapted the stories for the stage. More of her poems and short stories have appeared in various magazines and anthologies.
