11 Years Later, Another Earthquake: HHFOH Answer The Call For Help In Haiti

On this month's episode of Chita Tande with HHFOH, Graham interviews president and founder of Haitian Heritage & Friends of Haiti (HHFoH) Sabine Guerrier, in light of the recent 7.2 magnitude earthquake in the southwest region of Haiti on August 14, 2021. When asked whether she was surprised to see another major earthquake in Haiti barely 11 years one of 7.0 magnitude; which left the country's capital sunk in devastation and tens of thousands of Haitians dead, Sabine said she wasn't surprised that another earthquake took place in Haiti; however, she was surprised at the fact that this recent one still caught the country largely unprepared. Sabine also discussed HHFoH's plans to return to Haiti and provide medical aides, shelter, and other necessities. Graham and Sabine pointed out that Haitian Heritage & Friends of Haiti is one of the few non-profit organizations who continues to work in Haiti even after the cameras and international new channels have left. Graham highlighted the reason smaller non-profits like HHFoH are the better choice for donations because contrary to the large international organizations, HHFoH does not have overhead expenses, and doesn't pay salaries to any of its members. Listen to the conversation as it continues and learn more about Haitian Heritage & Friends of Haiti's immediate response to this recent earthquake and subsequent floods caused by tropical storm Grace. Reacting To, and Coping With The Recent Events In Haiti

Reacting To, and Coping With The Recent Events In Haiti

On this month's episode of Chita Tande with HHFoH, Graham gathered a diverse panel of members of Haitian Heritage & Friends of Haiti to discuss and react to the recent tragic news of the assassination of Haiti's president Jovenel Moise. As a Haitian-American organization, we grappled with the idea of having this discussion without making it a political debate, but at the same time, we recognized it was necessary for us to talk about this tragedy and what it means for Haiti's immediate future.

The Haitian Diaspora & The Haitian Flag Holiday | Bonus: Haitian History Quiz

The Haitian Diaspora & The Haitian Flag Holiday | Bonus: Haitian History Quiz

On this episode of Chita Tande with HHFoH, Graham, Naomie, Hancy, Natasha, and Micana sit down for a conversation regarding the vast difference in the observance of Haitian Flag Day on May 18th between Haitians in diaspora and those who live in Haiti. Graham began by asking each Haitian-born member of the panel to recount their experience in how the holiday was celebrated in Haiti and compare it with the grandiose and fervent manner in which Haitian-Americans celebrate Haitian Flag Day with parades, parties, and a massive online presence. Natasha, the only US-born member of the panel, spoke of the way she discovered the importance of Haitian Flag Day for the small Haitian community in which she grew up in Connecticut.  Graham ended the conversation with a 10-question Haitian history quiz by dividing the panel in two teams composed by Hancy and Natasha as Team A, and Naomie and Micana as Team B.

Who We Are and The Work We Do

Who We Are and The Work We Do

Haitian-American podcaster Graham Pierre-Louis hosted Episode 1 of Chita Tande with HHFoh. Graham began by introducing a panel lead by Haitian Heritage & Friends of Haiti (HHFoH) founder and president Sabine Guerrier along with founding member and secretary Naomie Pascal, and new member Natasha Charles. Sabine began by recounting her memory of the fateful day in 2010 when she received a call at work from her nephew telling her an earthquake had struck Haiti, and immediately feeling an urge to take action to help. Sabine describes the steps she took as she called on local community leaders, co-workers, friends and volunteers to organize HHFOH's first relief trip to Haiti in less than a month after the earthquake. Naomie recounts how she met Sabine during those days, and how volunteering on the trip to Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake inspired her to continue working with HHFOH both as a native of Haiti, and a professional in the healthcare field. Natasha tells us how she became a part of HHFOH when she'd recently moved to Charlotte for work and immediately began to research the strength of the Haitian community in Charlotte, and HHFOH was at the top of her search result; which led her to establish contact with Sabine who invited her to a 10th anniversary vigil for the victims of the 2010 earthquake. Sabine and Naomie discuss HHFoH's health clinic project and what is currently needed to begin the construction work. Sabine explained why the Health Clinic is important to her and every HHFoH volunteer, but most of all, how many lives can be saved once the health clinic is functional.
