Dan Lorang - Coach to World Ironman Champions Jan Frodeno and Anne Haug and Head Coach at BoraHansgrohe Inside Tri Show

    • Running

Dan Lorang's been labelled as 'The World's best Long Course coach." He guided both Jan Frodeno and Anne Haug to the Ironman World Championship title in 2019. Listen carefully - he might be softly spoken but he has some real nuggets in this chat. He also seems to be one of the World's nicest people too and it was such pleasure to chat to him.
You'll hear:
06:20 How Anne Haug and Jan Frodeno have dealt with 2020 differently 'it was not so hard for her to have not competed but for Jan he is a racer and he needs to be back on the start line soon'
11:50 How he got into coaching and how he started to coach 2019 Ironman World Champion Anne Haug when they met at University. "I want to do triathlon, I have no clue how to do it." She said. "Ok, I have to learn how to make training plans, so we can try together. And that was how it started. It's a really long-term athlete/coach relationship, for sure something special."
15:20 "I'd never have dreamt to have two world champions at the same time"
22:08 When he met Jan and started to work with him and why their athlete/coach partnership works.
'When things aren't going as he wants, he would shout around and as a young coach, with a completely different character, you'd stand there and say nothing and just look and learn and say nothing.'
30:26 The hardest time for him as a coach, when his athlete Sarah True collapsed less than 1km before the finish line at Ironman Frankfurt.
35:30 His role as Head Coach and BORAhansgrohe cycling team and what it's like working with Peter Sagan.
36:35 Why the boss of BORAhansgrohe got a tattoo of Peter Sagan on his ankle
41:58 Athletes are always looking at trying to find something different but I think you can come really far if you get the basics right. I'm a big fan of doing the basics right.
44:00 We talk about knowing your body "the most important feedback is from the athlete and how they felt in a session or a race."
