S2:E6 Staying young even when we are getting older

The hit ABC docuseries Old People’s Home for Four-Year-Olds showed us the positive physical and mental health benefits of intergenerational activities involving seniors. But why is social connection and daily activity so important when it comes to remaining young and feeling valued? In this episode, Graham Mabury chats with Murdoch University’s Associate Professor of Nursing, Susan Slatyer about care that suits the individual. We also learn more about Susan’s inspiring research into dementia and the role of nursing in aged care.

S2:E5 Home is where the heart is

As we travel the ageing journey, it’s natural to want to remain in our own home, surrounded by the things we love. While we might need some help with daily tasks, shopping or personal care, we want to maintain our independence and live life to the full. Graham Mabury meets Dolly Weaver, one of WA’s busiest seniors to find out how home care has kept her and husband Kenneth together in the family home while they both pursue their individual passions. Baptistcare’s General Manager of Customer Services, Duncan Guy, is on hand to provide insight into the practical and financial aspects of arranging home care that suits you.

S2:E2 Working in aged care - what’s it really like?

S2:E2 Working in aged care - what’s it really like?

You might be surprised to know that Australia’s aged care sector employs more than 360,000 extraordinary workers who care for more than 1.5M older people. While many of us associate aged care with nurses, they only make up around 20% of employees. This dynamic workforce is comprised of other roles such as personal care assistants, support workers, lifestyle coordinators, allied health professionals, cleaning, laundry, catering and administration. Graham Mabury sits down for a chat with two of them, Baptistcare Lifestyle Coordinator Kim Jordan, and Care Partner Ron Manuel.

S2:E1 Diversity within diversity - multicultural ageing

S2:E1 Diversity within diversity - multicultural ageing

Accessing the information needed to make important decisions about aged care can be overwhelming for anyone. But it is especially difficult if you’re from a culturally and linguistically diverse background (CALD). Many CALD seniors worry they will lose their identity, culture and diversity if they enter the aged care system. Host Graham Mabury chats with lifelong friend and President of the Ethnic Communities Council of Western Australia, Suresh Rajan, about some of the unique challenges facing older Australians from CALD backgrounds.
