Keep Your Marketing Simple - Four steps for better videos to improve your marketing

The goal of this video is to give you simple tips for how to shoot videos at home in a way that looks professional and is engaging.

    1. Video Lighting - Face a natural light source

What that means is just face a window, so you get lots of light coming in and lights up your face so that we can see you. If you don't do this, and if you put the window in the background which we see quite often, you end up becoming very dark looking like a silhouette. If you are dark we can't actually see your face and people really connect with your face. So face a natural light source, simply face a window.

    2. Video Background - Think about what is behind you

So you wanna remove a lot of the distractions and keep everything as simple as possible so that it looks nice. Now, as a rule of thumb, a boring background means a boring video, or a tacky background means a tacky video. So what you wanna do is you wanna make it look as good as you can. Now if you need advice for making the background of your video better, leave a comment below and we can give you some advice there. I can even bring in some other people who give me advice about how to do this setup, for example Will Gordon, who's an amazing photographer, I'm sure he'll be happy to leave a few comments below as well.

    3. Video audio - Improve your audio with a microphone

Now given what's happening with the coronavirus, that might not be easy to order a new microphone or something like that. I can leave a link below for the audio microphone that I use, which is really good, I've used it for years, lasts a long time, it's about $100, and it's really really good quality, but there's a tonne of really good quality microphones that you can use. I strongly recommend that you use a microphone, not just use the internal microphone of a phone or of a computer. This will make a big difference to your video.

    4. Video delivery - Structure your talk

Now this is actually the most important one. Even if you get all of the others wrong, if you do this right, you can deliver really good information. In terms of structuring your talk, what you need to do is

    Step one: Hook

Start with a really good hook, which is you ask a good question,

    Step two: Desire

Talk about the desire, which is what people want to achieve.

    Step three: Problem

Discuss the problem, which is what is stopping them from achieving what they want to achieve.

    Step four: Solution

Discuss the solution, which is what's going to solve their problem.

    Step five: Application

Talk about how you apply the solution so that they get an understanding of how the product or service actually solves their problem,

    Step six: Call to Action

The last one is how they can buy it from you. So if you do all of these things that I'm discussing right now and apply it to your videos, I guarantee, you'll end up with a better video.

Strategic Content Workshop - Content to strategically cut through - Campaign your content

When creating strategic content, there are 3 main steps in order to maximise your reach.

    Content Creation
    Distribution to digital assetts
    Campaigning

Most people ignore the campaigning part of the strategic content process.

Campaigning involves reaching out to magazines, blogs, podcasts or anyone who has access to large audiences.

The focus of the strategy is to align with brands that have similar values.  Their audiences must have some interest in your strategic content.

Campaigning is the most powerful part of strategic content and unfortunately, most people ignore it.

Strategic Content Workshop - Content to strategically cut through - 6 of 7 - Cut Through is an Emotional Angle

Strategic Content Workshop - Content to strategically cut through - Cut Through is an Emotional Angle

The objective of your content is to connect with your audience.  Without an emotional connection, your content will be dismissed.

To create strategic content that connects with your audience on an emotional level, the question becomes how to tell that story.

The way I create strategic content that connects on an emotional level is to find someone who champions that story. They become a brand champion.

The first step in strategic content is to identify the emotion you want to use to connect with your audience, then identify someone who champions that message.

Strategic Content Workshop - Content to strategically cut through - Turn Videos Into Articles

To get the most out of your strategic content, the best thing to do is to re-purpose it.  Each video can get turned into 4 pieces of content.

Each strategic piece of content will give you a video, an image, a podcast and a blog.

The fastest way to strategically create a blog is to use the words in the video as quotations in an article about the video.

The article explains what the video is about as if a magazine wrote it.  This strategic content allows people to experience the same content twice on one page.

It is strategic in that it reinforces your message by tapping into different learning styles.

This is strategically powerful, as it allows people to understand what the video is about from a third person.  It enhances learning and helps people retain more information from the content.

Strategic Content Workshop - Content to strategically cut through - Struggles make us Human

Brene Brown has been instrumental in helping us understand the power of vulnerability.  But that doesn’t make it easier.

When creating strategic content that cuts through the noise of social media, vulnerability is a powerful way to connect with an audience.

Using vulnerability strategically, allows you to show your more human side, instead of your company side.

Stories of struggle allow people to relate to who you are and what you do and this strategy allows you to connect with people through your content.

The more vulnerable the story and the more difficult it is to talk about, the better the story and the better the content.

To make this strategy work, identify the topic and then find someone who champions the message.

Strategic Content Workshop - Content to strategically cut through - 3 of 7 - Identify Motivations

Strategic Content Workshop - Content to strategically cut through - Identify Motivations

When creating strategic content, one of the first things I identify is your customer's motivations.

In this 1 on 1 workshop, we touched on the motivations to inspire others.  We discussed how their success inspires others and how we can strategically create content based on these stories.

Some of the stories are simply incredible. The people they help are absolutely stunning in what they can do. In this strategic content workshop, we discussed how disabled people are often more brilliant than abled people.

These types of stories are particularly powerful and from a strategic content point of view, offer an ability to get cut through.
