Episode 50 - Mid Major Memories with UW-Milwaukee's Ed McCants
The 50th episode features a catch-up with a man who helped lead a memorable Sweet 16 run in 2005 for the UW-Milwaukee Panthers and Coach Bruce Pearl. Marion, Ohio's Ed McCants still has basketball in his blood. He now finds himself as an ambassador for women's hoops, which is awesome. But in this pod we talk about his longing to have been an Ohio State Buckeye, the 2005 tournament run, what the Sweet 16 experience was like at a Mid-Major. Plus a discussion you have to hear on girls' hoops (22:10) and how it deserves better. Plus, what the hell is like to actually play pro ball overseas? He tells you. Enjoy the Mad About Hoops catch up with Ed McCants!
Episode 49 - Legal Screening Edition: Hoosiers
It's summertime and we here at Mad About Hoops love a good movie as much as the next guy. So we decided to wrap our arms around Hoosiers, one of the most well known sports movies of all time, and an undeniable classic. We even recruited a couple movie buffs from the Nerd Association podcast to give it a more critical eye. Also, we got a Dad to join the podcast for the first time. A real life Hoosier himself Jeff Hall joins the pod to give his thoughts and perspectives on the film. Jeff played varsity ball at Chesterton HS in the 70s and was a scout team player at Purdue in the early 80s. We hope you enjoy Mad About Hoops at the movies!
Episode 48 - The Buckeye offseason and Coach K retires
After a two month hiatus we're baaaaaaaaaack!!! And Tim and Colin are looking at each other face to face in an actual radio studio for the first time since March of 2020. What a ridiculously wild year it's been. This is maybe the most free flowing podcast we've ever done. The only topics on the docket were Coach K's retirement and our reaction to that major news. Plus we put K and Roy up against each other in terms of likability. And at 38:40 we dive into Ohio State's offseason and its chances in 21/22. It's June 8 but we are just as Mad About Hoops as we've ever been.
Episode 47 - Baylor wraps up the season, and Hubert Davis is Carolina's guy
Wow. We raise a glass to the 2020-2021 college basketball season. It's been real. And my goodness to Baylor end it with emphasis. Putting a harsh stop to Gonzaga's perfect season request. We spend the first segment breaking that down and how to view the Zags. I blast Colin for something that went on in a staff bracket pool (15:32). And at 18:58 we start talking about the UNC hire, and talk about how Karma got Sean Miller finally. And check back often as we get going in the offseason!
Episode 46 - Final Four, balancing life and March Madness and Roy retires
Dag gummit we have no Roy Williams anymore. It was going to happen at some point, and now maybe the most prestigious job in the game is open (20:07). But the guys open right about the difficulties of balancing real life and watching March Madness. Sorry families! Then they go fast and furious on the Final Four. Do you want the Zags vs. Baylor (5:50)? How good has Timme been (8:46)? And these guys seemingly give Houston no love. So the Cougars will probably win it all.
Episode 45 - Indiana Hoops and Anthony Rothman
Longtime fans of 97.1 The Fan will love this one. The midday sports talker Anthony Rothman joins us! We get into a wide ranging college basketball (and even beyond) discussion that isn't just limited to IU. We begin with a tale of a legendary video tape he made for his brother back in the day, and he used some pull as a TV sportscaster to do it (3:43). And did you know he attended not one but two college basketball powerhouses as a student (15:22)? We break down the IU hire (20:23) and how crucial Thad Matta's hire is for Mike Woodson (27:26). Then we talk tournament surprises before we hit Anthony with some jump shots (43:45).
