Episode 157 - 2001: A Year In The Life Of Metallica

Episode 157 - 2001: A Year In The Life Of Metallica

We continue our 'A Year In the Life of Metallica' series by diving into 2001. This is arguably one of the most tumultuous and defining years the band has faced, beginning with the shocking departure of long time bass player Jason Newsted in January. Without a replacement, the band moved into the Presidio to start writing and recording what would ultimately become St. Anger. But those sessions were cut short when James Hetfield checked himself into rehab in June for alcohol and other addictions. The year ends with James finally returning home from rehab and with the future of Metallica uncertain. Other notable events this year include:

    - Lars as a celebrity guest on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire
    - the release of the Playboy Interview
    - live collaborations with Corrosion of Conformity, Jerry Cantrell and Sammy Hagar
    - "The Call of Ktulu" wins a Grammy award
    - McFarlane releases the Justice era action figures
    - Metallica ad Napster settle their lawsuit

Episode 155 - Ray Burton Revisited

Episode 155 - Ray Burton Revisited

Ray Burton, father of legendary Metallica bass player Cliff Burton, passed away on January 15th due to complications with pneumonia. He was 94 years old.

Ray lived an incredibly long and fruitful life, keeping the memory and legacy of Cliff alive the entire time. Many of us got to meet Ray in our journeys to Metallica shows and he greeted every one with kindness and love.

In this episode we, along with others including Metallica themselves, pay tribute to Ray Burton. We were lucky to have Ray on the podcast for our milestone 100th episode. He was as kind and generous as all the stories we heard, even sending us personalized letters after the interview.

We are lucky to have called him a friend. We sure will miss him, as we're sure you all will too. We love you, Ray. Rest in peace.

Episode 154 - Anniversary Party Recap (RIP Ray Burton)

Episode 154 - Anniversary Party Recap (RIP Ray Burton)

The Metallica community was saddened to hear Sunday evening that Ray Burton has passed away. As many of you know, Ray was the father of the late, great Cliff Burton, one of the most beloved and influential musicians in recent history. Since Cliff's passing in 1986, Ray Burton has been a spiritual fixture in the Metallica family. Supportive through the transitions of the two successors of Cliff's position in Metallica, Ray was often seen at shows meeting fans and cheering the band on. For our 100th episode, Ray was kind enough to grant us an interview, sharing with us details about Cliff as a child, the ascension of Metallica, Cliff's death and preserving his legacy through the years. Ray's passing is a deeply felt loss for many of us. He brought light to anyone who knew him and he will be missed. We love you Ray! Thank you for everything! Rest in peace, friend!

On this episode we talk about James getting out of rehab and making his first public appearance at the Reclaimed Rust exhibit in Los Angeles later this month, the AWMH Foundation's generous contribution to the Australian wildfires, Kirk's collaboration at Abbey Road with Peter Green, and, of course, we recap all the fun shenanigans of our 3 year anniversary party which culminated with a beautifully put together montage video of listeners from all over the world and a few notable guests to commemorate us surpassing 1 million downloads. It was a fun, emotional night. If you couldn't be there, this episode is the next best thing.

Special thanks are in order to Chris Yerges, who went above and beyond (as usual) to make this party special for us and fellow MUYP family. To all of you who traveled (Eric, Dave, Alex, Nicole, Sacha, Blake, Sean, Blazeck, Lyons and others) long distances to attend, to the Cobra for hosting, to Lzzy and Joe from Halestorm for participating in the raffles, Alex and Chris for donating to the raffles, and to our beloved Paul Moak for hanging out and looking cool in a leather jacket.
