Too nerdy

The three people that used to host the Kotaku podcast have gone indie - and the results are mixed.

I can admire the guts of trying to distinguish themselves from any other gaming podcast out there. However, now they have gone too far in that direction, in my opinion.

You come, or I at least do, for the takes on the latest news or the newly released games. And I chose to listen to them on the old podcast specifically, as they are extremely insightful, critical and occasionally very funny. In Triple Click, some episodes are designated to news or new games, and I find these the most enjoyable. The latest Assassin’s Creed Valhalla episode is good example of this.

In between, there are episodes where they discuss a certain topic. In these, I often find myself skipping forward. They require a lot from the listeners. You need knowledge about certain computer parts in the last decade to follow the conversation or be caught up on American football. The episode about building your own PC is an example of this, where I just don’t understand the appeal at all.

The conversations can be simply be extremely nerdy and a tad too high brow, which is, admittedly, something that could or should be a good thing. However, I just find it too difficult to follow.

This review is already too long, so let me finish by saying that the hosts are great and have a fun dynamic between them. It’s just feels like a waste that they keep talking about niche subject, when they often have the most interesting (btw, a word that is spoken way too much on the podcast) takes on everything else that is going on the in the gaming world.
