Karen O’Leary on Becoming an ‘Accidental Actor’, Newshub Closure & Wellington Paranormal Success

Karen O’Leary on Becoming an ‘Accidental Actor’, Newshub Closure & Wellington Paranormal Success

On this episode of Between Two Beers we talk to Karen O’Leary.

Karen has one of the most interesting career arcs of anyone on our screens.

She worked as an early childhood educator for two decades, before being tricked into auditioning for a role in Taika Waititi and Jermaine Clement’s cult-classic feature What We Do In The Shadows.

Her head-turning 90 second performance as Officer O’Leary led to the lead role in comedy spin-off series Wellington Paranormal, a show that is broadcast around the world in 70 countries.

Then last year she made the switch to current events, and won the coveted Best Presenter of Entertainment award for her work on Paddy Gower has Issues on Newshub, months before it was announced the show would not be returning.

In this episode we talk about her unique career path and all the best stories along the way, her reaction to Newshub shutting down and whats next, getting naked with Jermaine Clement, why her nickname is little bush, the best of Officer O’Leary and much much more.

Karen is a lethal combination of charismatic, hilarious and smart – and this was a really fun one, with so many great yarns.

We're also super stoked to have Karen on the books of B2B Speakers, so if you’d like her to MC your night, or share her story at your function or event, flick us a message by going to B2Bspeakers.co.nz. Jehan Casinader: How to Re-Write Your Life Story, Masculinity, Mental Health & NZ’s Identity Crisis

On this episode of Between Two Beers we talk to Jehan Casinader.Jehan Casinader is an award-winning journalist who is now one of New Zealand’s most sought-after key note speakers. He worked in primetime TV for more than a decade across roles with Sunday., Seven Sharp, Close Up and Breakfast and was named “Broadcast Reporter of the Year” in 2020.Jehan specialises in reporting on social issues. From gritty investigations to moving human-interest pieces and revealing celebrity profiles – Jehan has done them all. He also produced and hosted TVNZ’s first-ever mental health series, The Inside Word.

In this episode we talk about writing stories for the Holmes programme at 13, and travelling the world as a journo at 20. The collapse of the NZ media industry, why it happened and what we can learn from it, his night in Gloriavale, Graham Norton, why we have a men’s mental health crisis in NZ, and tips for those wanting to build their personal brand.

Jehan also shared details of his four-year struggle with depression, and suicidality and how “rewriting” his story helped him to survive.

This was an incredibly rich and thought-provoking chat. Jehan is one of NZ’s best and most articulate speakers and his messaging is so strong.

His message that many Kiwis think their brains are broken, but in fact, it’s our stories that are broken – feels very timely right now.

Awen Guttenbeil: The Highs & Lows of the NZ Warriors, Doing the Haka for the Queen & More!

Awen Guttenbeil: The Highs & Lows of the NZ Warriors, Doing the Haka for the Queen & More!

Awen Guttenbeil was suggested to us 18 months ago as a guest with ‘serious depth’.

And he did not disappoint. In fact, we loved this ep so much we’re re-releasing it this week for all those who may have missed it a year ago.

You may know Awen as one of New Zealand’s greatest rugby league players, with 170 caps for the Warriors over a professional career that spanned 15 years. What you might not know, is that in the first five years of his career he spent more time under general anesthetic then he did on the field.

In this episode we talk about the mental toll of 60 hours under GA and how he got his career back on track, the hustle, grind and drive to set up his thriving business career post footy, reflections on the Warriors’ most famous scraps, the best end of year trip stories, why he didn’t fancy a career as a broadcaster, meeting the queen, what he’s learned as a dad, golf, what the next chapter looks like and much much more.

This ep was really special. Awen is such an eloquent speaker with a lifetime of important lessons to share. We asked him some ‘big picture’ questions at the end, and the impromptu, thoughtful, articulate answers blew us away. You'll love this one.

We’re also super stoked to tell you about the business we’ve built. If you’d like to hire one of our incredible guests to speak or MC your event, check out our epic lineup at B2Bspeakers.co.nz and get in touch. So good

Have just finished the Lauren Rae episode and am just kinda in love really. I love to hear that people want to find people to talk to about how they are feeling and emotions. I have been starved of that my whole life and thought of sadness as for the weak until now, and I’m 49. I fkn loved this episode. Thanks Lauren and fellas.
