Encore: The Cleave Series: How Did John Lennon Live in 1966? Part 1

In this episode, host Diana Erickson and regular guest Dr. Duncan Driver dive into the first part of Maureen Cleave's 1966 profile of John Lennon, originally published in The Evening Standard under the title "How A Beatle Lives." These extraordinary interviews offer unique insight into the Beatles' world and lives at this time. John Lennon captivates with his swagger and charm.

These contemporaneous portraits hold significant value because they challenge some of the dominant stories about the Beatles at this time. So much of our understanding of the Beatles has been informed by what the Beatles said after the breakup, and this close reading allows us to consider what they actually said at that time.

One Sweet Dream of a Podcast

This podcast is the best Beatles podcast out there. As a Beatles fan from infancy, growing up with their music & stories around me, I thought I knew everything about them. Diana & her guests, including the delicious-sounding voice of Duncan Driver & Chris Salwicz, shine a light on Beatles past that are not often enough covered. Or, if they are, not in the amount of detail & research that the One Sweet Dream team provide. I especially enjoyed the 'RAM' episodes. Oh, the 'Instant Karma' one blew my mind several times. Great thoughtful analysis in those ones & elsewhere in these podcasts. Many thanks, Thomas.

Making it make sense

Really enjoying your insights which I haven’t seen elsewhere and which make so much sense. They build on and (significantly) enhance themes that seemed clear coming in new to the Beatles a couple of months ago and just looking at the data. Surprisingly to me, the main benefit of your approach is helping me to understand and (try to) reconcile John’s behaviour, which is otherwise just so mean and unlikeable that it’s been alienating. I'll definitely keep listening - your focus on giving them equal weight (and emotions) makes them both much more understandable and makes their relationship and so the story make far more sense than any other site or podcast I’ve found. Thanks!
