In recent years new renewable energy technologies are being investigated and the infrastructure to support different renewable sources of energy are being developed. As these new technologies mature, viable alternatives need to be considered in the interim to reduce the economic and environmental impact on the quality of life. Environmental, economical, technological, energy security, scalability, social, cultural, policy, and standard of living factors need to be considered and evaluated, in the interim period, as the world moves toward renewable energy sources without destabilizing the global energy balance. Many options exist that can be considered as energy sources during this transition period, which include fossil fuels, bio-fuels, renewable energy sources, nuclear, geothermal and others. Different energy sources need to be evaluated from a holistic point of view to determine management of the dilemma between minimizing carbon footprint and maintaining quality of living.
