To help educators better understand the role of engineering, and to reach the largest number of middle and high school students, the Engineering the Future outreach program undertook the development of the "Building an Engineer" teleconference series. The purpose was to have a simple, organized structure for a diverse group of experts to discuss information concerning engineering and engineering education.
Our first teleconference "How to Help Our Students" was held on November 20, 2002. Through this teleconference, middle-school and high-school educators were introduced to experts in the field of engineering and engineering education. These experts discussed topics that included types of engineering, entering industry, parent and community involvement, and gender issues.
