    “We Need Each Other”

    Bible Passages: Acts 1:12-14

    Are we really SO Different or are we more the same?
    What is your child’s Label? Diagnosis? Struggle?
    Are our children so very different or more the same?
    Do you know a child with Downs who needs the same kind of therapy as a child with Autism?
    Do you know a child diagnosed with ADHD who can benefit from the gifts and talents and personality of a child with CP?

    Increase your circle of friends regardless of diagnoses.

    A child with Dyslexia could benefit from being friends with a child with high functioning Autism who writes easily.

    A child is a child.

    We are more the same than we are different, no matter what our issues, capabilities, gifts, concerns.

    In fact, a child with even multiple disabilities is more like a typical child than they are not.

    A child is a child.

    It is NEVER too late. There is always HOPE.

    C4P 26 - Enough or Push More

    C4P 26 - Enough or Push More

    Notes for Podcast 26 “Enough or Push More”
    Bible Passages: Proverbs 22:6, Ephesians 6:1-4, Matthew 5:48, 2 Corinthians 13:14
    Do you find yourself wondering how much you should push your children to develop?
    Parents we know have had several schools of thought:
    1. No interventions at all.
    2. Do hours and hours of research, interview many experts in all the therapy fields, hook their children up with the best.
    3. Intervention on steroids potentially to the detriment of siblings, spouses, friends (and maybe even the child).
    4. Learn from the experts, go for certifications and degrees in the fields that will most help your child, and do most of the interventions yourself at home.
    5. And variations and combinations of all of the above.

    THINGS TO CONSIDER"
    Medical fragility
    Season of life
    Other responsibilities
    This child’s personality
    This child’s capabilities
    This child’s spirit
    Siblings
    Aging parents
    The budget

    So, what is a parent to do?
    - Consider the above.
    - Pray.
    - wise counsel.
    - Get others to pray with you and for you and for your child.
    - Be willing to evaluate.
    - Don’t get discouraged or compare yourself to others.

    Remember:
    - YOU are the parent.
    - God has given you everything you need for life and godliness. 2 Pet.1:3
    - He who calls you is faithful. 1 Thes. 5:24
    - He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young. Isa. 40:11

    Learn to:
    - Listen
    - Move
    - Be okay with current resources.
    - Be willing to step it up.
    - Consider what you can do at home.
    - Consider getting trained yourself.

    God gave that specific child to YOU to raise for a time. Whether by adoption, foster care, or biologically, God has appointed you and He will equip you.

    It is NEVER too late. There is always HOPE.

    C4P 25 - Love Endures and Options

    C4P 25 - Love Endures and Options

    Show Notes for Podcast 25 “Love Endures & Options”

    Bible Passage: 1 Corinthians 13
    Devotional: “The Greatest of these is Love”
    Things to Remember:
    - Who is God as we raise our children?
    - The One who calls us
    - The One who equips us.
    - The One who cares.
    - The One who invites us to lean on Him.

    AND...
    - Our God is the Answer.
    - He is sufficient.
    - Our Savior is the Resource.
    - He deeply cares.

    OPTIONS
    As parents we are bombarded with gazillions of decisions we have to make for our children. As parents of children who have challenges, the decisions for those children can be quite daunting because they are outside our comfort zones and outside our familiarity.

    If the fit is not good – keep looking.
    Be open to new possibilities.
    Re-evaluate and regroup, if necessary.
    Tips to help as you evaluate:
    · Write out your questions
    · Search several trusted resources
    · Don’t be afraid of seemingly opposing ideas.
    o Mull them over. Talk about them. Identify pros and cons.
    · Most importantly PRAY. PRAY. PRAY.
    · Ask others to pray

    It is NEVER too late. There is always HOPE.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Transitions
    What we have learned through the raising of our four children is that communication is key for just about everything in life. So, the question is: how practically can we hep up the communication to alleviate the stress on both the child and us, as parents, with regard to transitions?
    Three Points of Contact:
    * Preparation
    * Heat of the Moment
    * Moving Forward
    Preparation – what can we put into place ahead of time to help our children with their transitions?
    In the Heat of the Moment – what can we do during the resistance and/or meltdowns?
    Moving Forward – what can we do to help our children learn how best to move forward
    Practical Helps:
    * Visual charts
    * Auditory input
    * Role playing
    * Toys as props
    * Teaching
    * Books from the Library
    * Social stories
    * Relieving sensory stress
