Conscience Purified by the Blood of Christ

Conscience Purified by the Blood of Christ

This is the fourth of five studies from the letter to the Hebrews.-The writer observes that the first -Mosaic- covenant has been made obsolete by the new. Unlike the old covenant's most holy sacrifices performed annually on the Day of Atonement, Christ's once-for-all sacrifice did something perpetual and powerfully effective regarding removal of our sin - guilt, cleansing our conscience, and opening up service in the heavenly sanctuary.

    No One Like Him

    No One Like Him

As we continue our series through Philippians, this week we are reminded that Paul is not alone in his imprisonment. He has with him his fellow servant in the gospel and -true child in the faith,- Timothy. -I have no one like him,- says Paul. What a wonderful commendation- And yet, what a sad and sorry state of affairs that there is only one man Paul knows who seeks not his own interests but those of Jesus Christ, only one who is genuinely concerned for the welfare of others. Isn't this the very heart and mind Paul exhorts the whole church towards earlier in Philippians 2 - the mind -which is yours in Christ Jesus--- How we must pray that the Lord might raise up more men and women in the body of Christ who are like Timothy, who reflect the very character of Christ who abides in us. Pray that he might -work in us all, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.-

Holding Fast to Our Great High Priest

Holding Fast to Our Great High Priest

This is the third of five studies from the letter to the Hebrews.-Whilst fearing unbelief itself, we live holding fast to our confidence, boldly approaching the throne of Grace with a clear conscience because we have a High Priest.-They -we- are not left with a threat of judgement- all that they need to endure and enter God's rest is found in our great high priest. They aren't to focus inwards -trying harder- to work up faith, they are to focus on Jesus Christ. These passages in Hebrews do exactly that- they draw their attention to Jesus Christ, their great high priest - their confident hope.

    A Life Without Grumbling

    A Life Without Grumbling

'To live is Christ-' - Paul wrote these substantial words in Philippians 1-21, and even though we have progressed in our sermons to 2-14-18, we have not moved on from this precious topic. Paul continues to lay before the Philippians church and us just what it means to -live is Christ-, to live -worthy of the gospel-, and to -work out our salvation.- It means to live as Christ lived, for God and others, as children of God who shine like stars and cling to the word of life rather than the ways of a dark, crooked and warped world. A life given to God as a joyful sacrifice rather than one lived in vain.

    Striving to Enter God's Rest

    Striving to Enter God's Rest

This is the second of five studies from the letter to the Hebrews.-The writer reminds the readers that the Holy Spirit's exhortation written by David in Psalm 95 is current. The creational rest that began in Eden can be entered by an enduring faith in Christ. This rest remains by the grace of God, despite unbelief - disobedience at the fall, and despite unbelief in the desert that prevented entry to rest in the promised land. -Unbelief and disobedience are shown to be synonymous, deadly and a constant danger to fear. The Christian community, God's house, are instructed to exhort each other daily to remember and trust in God's promises. -Whilst fearing unbelief itself, we live holding fast to our confidence, boldly approaching the throne of Grace with a clear conscience because we have a High Priest.

    Working Out With God

    Working Out With God

What does it mean to -work out your own salvation--- It certainly doesn't mean we work for our salvation. Instead, in light of what has come beforehand - in light of the cross of Christ and his exaltation, we are to 'work out' what our salvation means for us today - what a cruciform life 'worthy of the gospel' looks like in practice. Before long we will realise -and probably have to learn time and time again-- that we can only live such a life because it is God who works in us, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. It is his grace and power which enable us to live such a life, in Christ. Thanks be to God-
