In "Hardcore History" journalist and broadcaster Dan Carlin takes his "Martian", unorthodox way of thinking and applies it to the past. Was Alexander the Great as bad a person as Adolf Hitler? What would Apaches with modern weapons be like? Will our modern civilization ever fall like civilizations from past eras? This isn't academic history (and Carlin isn't a historian) but the podcast's unique blend of high drama, masterful narration and Twilight Zone-style twists has entertained millions of listeners.

More than addictive

Having listened to all Dan Carlin’s work, several times over, I know many of them virtually by heart. I have gone from simply enjoying the pods to finding comfort in them, and I have to confess that I now find it hard not to sleep at night without having his pieces playing on rotate. Very quietly, in the background, so that when I wake up, rather than thinking about the day to day things that used to keep me awake, I listen to a few minutes and can doze off again. My only problem is that the grand scope episodes take a while to com around.

Absolutely Incredible!

It’s been so fascinating listening to this podcast. Dan does an amazing job bringing history to life - you explore what it actually would’ve been like. It flows so well. The truth still stands, 15 minutes of boring is 15 minutes too long but 4 hours of fascinating is 4 hours not enough. And this is definitely not boring. Enjoy!!

Simply magnificent.

Despite every single episode of Hardcore History being fabulous, Dan’s 6 part series on the First World War is, for my money, the single greatest piece of podcasting of all time. The listener is utterly spellbound from the start, and this series far surpasses any book or documentary one could possibly write on the subject in terms of accessibility, sheer interest, historical immersion and empathetic emotion brought to bear. But no matter the subject, Dan switches seamlessly from a birds eye to a macro view throughout his story, all the while instilling the listener with the enthusiasm and oftentimes awe he so clearly has for the subject at hand. I honestly cannot say enough good things about this podcast.
