473 – Fallout on TV, Phantom Menace is back!, Challengers
This week, Katey and David are both attempting to watch Amazon Studios Fallout adaptation and Matt Patches, who has seen the whole thing, tries to manage their expectations. Then, Da7e is going back to the theaters to watch Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace this weekend and suggests some reasons why. Finally, everyone saw Challengers (in theaters now!) and gets together for a discussion about the movie that doesn’t spoil the ending.

472 – Netflix’s Blockbuster Problem, Bluey’s “Surprise,” Shogun
This week, in a slightly later podcast than usual, the whole gang gets together in the War Room. First, Patches and David both saw Rebel Moon: The Scargiver (that’s part two of Rebel Moon) and neither liked it very much, which has us all debating what Netflix’s blockbuster movie strategy is. Then, Bluey had a surprise episode (not so surprising if you listened to Da7e last week) and it’s sparked a very silly online debate amongst Bluey adults. Finally, Katey, Da7e, and David watched all of Shogun (Fox on Hulu on Disney Plus) and touch base to sing its praises with some mild-spoilers peppered in. Watch Shogun!

471 – Bluey, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, Civil War
This week, everyone jumps in to check in on Bluey (streaming on Disney Plus) in honor of the series longest episode to date “The Sign,” which functions as a possible finale (but likely isn’t). Then, David reports back from director Guy Richie’s very busy period with some thoughts on The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare before all four hosts jump into a war of their own with Alex Garland’s latest Civil War, currently in theaters.

For a mini-segment, Patches ask that we all reflect on this week’s solar eclipse, then all the hosts dive into Apple TV Plus’ new documentary Girls State (opinions expressed by Da7e in the e-mail response section do not represent the opinions of other Fighting In The War Room hosts or anyone previously associated with the podcast or who may appear on the podcast in the future).

469 – Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, Katey’s Vanity Fair Exit, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
This week, David has to sit a week out of the War Room, but it’s just because of visiting in-laws – he is safe and fine! Katey, Patches, and Da7e convene so Patches and Da7e can talk about the not-good, but also not-bad Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire, then Katey updates everyone on her departure from Vanity Fair and what her media life is like now. Finally, Katey and Da7e dig into another type of Empire in theaters right now, a Ghostbusters Frozen one since Katey’s eldest child wanted to see it as his first foray into the world of Ghostbusting. There are some spoilers for both Empire movies this week in their segments but those spoilers are VERY slight considering these movies and their visual spectacles.

This week on a slightly longer than usual episode, Da7e is back to catch up on your e-mails and explain to everyone exactly what happened last week that landed him in the hospital (and how he’s going to be missing movies in theaters for the time being because of an open wound). Then, Patches gets some lightning round style reactions to this summer’s big upcoming tentpole movies. Finally, everyone dives into Doug Liman’s Road House, currently streaming on Amazon.

Can Katey get the Little Gold Men team to check the pronunciation for Chloe Zhao
I’m not sure they’ve been saying it right this awards season but they don’t seem to have an email and I live outside the US so can’t text in. Otherwise, love both shows, thanks! Usually skip this segment (thanks for the clear bookmarks on segments too).
It's a Podcast!
And what a podcast it is. The editing with the interludes, the comradery of these friends praising (or ranting) about movies, and the extra general pop culture segments all combine to a wholly enjoyable experience. The differing perspectives mean that it is rare that I can't agree with someone's take. But there is often someone who presents another perspective - and that is almost equally important.
I have been listening for less than a year, but am always excited when this one pops up on my feed. Keep up the great work.
Matthew
P.S.
I guess owing to Jane Campion being a New Zealander we are getting a showing of Top of the Lake Season 2 in one of our best theatres in a few weeks. I am taking time off work and flying to the other end of the country just to see it so i'm hoping David's exultation of it holds true.
A humble review
Frankly, I never thought you would check the New Zealand iTunes page. David, you caught us out! But to defend ourselves here, us kiwis are a humble species and we needed that extra encouragement to write a review that may be read on the air.
I used to be a no-good TV viewer like Joanna Robinson (still am) but your podcast has gotten me into films I might never have otherwise seen. Thank you Katey, Da7e, Patches, and David for making me a better human.
As a token of my gratitude if any of you do come down to Wellington be sure to check out the wonderful Embassy Theatre where we can watch a film together that was screened a month or more ago in the US. Right now you can see such highlights as John Wick: Chapter 2.
Yes, that's the cinema that held the 2003 red carpet premiere for Return of the King. But forget Lord of the Rings, now all we're known for is John Oliver making fun of us. Please do your John Oliver impressions again because I need more of that in my life.
