Comparing My Postpartum Experiences: Mental Health, Letting Go of Control, and What I’ve Learned

Comparing My Postpartum Experiences: Mental Health, Letting Go of Control, and What I’ve Learned

In this solo episode, I unpack how both of my postpartum experiences have differed, from my relationships with anxiety and depression; to my fixation on controlling outcomes; to how I have prioritized self care and developed mental health toolkits for myself. I recap my first postpartum experience in 2021, sharing what my relationship with anxiety was like before getting pregnant and how it manifested in postpartum, and how my need for control created obsessive behaviors. I then share my second and most recent postpartum experience, from dealing with sleep issues with both children; to feeling mentally stronger; to letting go of how things “should be” and embracing them for what they are. Finally, I share what I wish I had started earlier during postpartum, and what I would tell myself as a first-time mother experiencing both the highs and lows of postpartum.

Key Takeaway / Points:Recapping my first postpartum experience in 2021My relationship with anxiety and journey with anxiety medication before getting pregnantOn planning for postpartum anxiety and depression before giving birthWhen and how my mental health struggles hit during postpartumHow I developed a self-care toolkit and prioritized my mental healthOn experiencing intrusive thoughtsOn my need for control and planning obsessivelyMy postpartum experience with our second childOn dealing with sleep issues with both childrenWhat has helped with my mental health this time aroundOn letting go of control as a second-time momWhat I wish I had started earlier during postpartumWhat I would tell myself during my first postpartum experience

“Why is Applying Full Body Sunscreen in Public So Humiliating?” Vacation Recap and Laughs with My Sister, Lucy

In this episode, I sit down with my sister Sarah Louise (aka Lucy) to unpack both of our recent trips, whether I’ve become a grandparent on vacation, and our differences as “beach people” vs. “non-beach people”. We discuss Lucy’s birth name, the humiliation of applying sunscreen in public, and whether you’re a no-pee person or a multiple bathroom trips person on planes. Friendship Series - Championing Your Fellow Mothers with Mandi and Lindsey

In this episode, I sit down with my two friends and fellow mothers, Mandi and Lindsey, to discuss how we’re all doing in postpartum, how we became friends in the first place, and how we’ve supported each other through pregnancy, breastfeeding, and everything in between. We share why our husbands had to force us to be friends at first, how we are each others’ champions vs. cheerleaders, and how our second postpartum experiences have differed from our firsts – from our bodies, to our work, to our mental health. We also talk about why Lindsey decided to stop breastfeeding and how she went about it, what we love about having two children and what’s been the most challenging, how we’ve been working through the “roommates” phase with our husbands, and so much more.
