Is the rise of home baristas and better home coffee equipment killing cafes?

In Episode 6 of the Home Barista Podcast, I'm tackling a hotly debated topic in the coffee industry: is the rise of home baristas and better home coffee equipment killing cafes?
With the increasing popularity of home brewing and the availability of high-quality and affordable equipment, more and more people are turning to home brewing rather than visiting cafes. This is causing a decline in business for cafes, cafe owners, coffee roasters, and restaurants.
In this episode, I share thoughts from industry experts that I spoke to around this topic to understand the extent of the problem and the reasons behind it. I'll also be sharing some thoughts on how I believe cafes facing these challenges can and maybe short adapt to the changing market.
If you're a cafe owner, coffee roaster, or restaurant, this episode is essential listening. You'll gain valuable insights from me as a customer into the current situation.
Whether you're a business owner or a coffee enthusiast, you won't want to miss this episode. Tune in to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing cafes and learn about the actions that can be taken to support them.

☕️ Coffee Break Ep:5 - Thank You and Merry Christmas 🎄

Hey, all you beautiful coffee lovers.

Here we are coming to the end of 2022! Like what the heck? How has this even happened? This year has been a flash, I know we say that every year, but seriously this year has FLOWN BY!

Today's episode is a quick thank you message from me to round out the year. I had planned to release a whole episode about a specific topic but after listening back to the recording and re-watching the video I wasn't happy with either of them and sat there thinking to myself "What are you even talking about here?" hahaha. So, that episode got scrapped and I took the opportunity to record a thank you episode for you all as 2022 has been a huge year for me as The Drumming Barista and in my personal life as Sean.

2022 has seen the launch of the Home Barista Podcast, The Drumming Barista on YouTube, and Being invited to fly to Auckland to be a judge at the New Zealand Aeropress Champs, Hitting 2000 followers on Instagram, connecting with so many new coffee and alcohol brands, food brands, international coffee content creators and welcoming so many new people and faces into The Drumming Barista global community. It’s been busy that’s for sure. But, I wouldn't want it any other way.

So, for the sake of keeping this description short. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for all the love and support towards me and The Drumming Barista community this year. Thank you for becoming a part of it and for sticking around. It honestly means the world and without you guys, on my side, I couldn't do this without you.

Anyway's less reading this and more listening to the episode!

Be sure to hit that subscribe button so that in 2023 you don't miss out on any future episodes.

How The Drumming Barista Trains His Palate - Coffee Break Ep:4

How The Drumming Barista Trains His Palate - Coffee Break Ep:4

Hey, all you beautiful coffee lovers!
I hope you are all doing super well. I am so excited (as always) to be back behind the microphone and to be bringing you a new episode of Coffee Break here on the Home Barista Podcast.

Today's episode is one that has taken far too long for me to create and for that, I apologise but Hey, here we are. Better late than never that's for sure. I am talking about how I, The Drumming Barista have trained my palate over the 6 - 7 years that I have taken coffee and being a home barista more seriously than it just being a hobby. As mentioned in the podcast this is a question that I get asked so often and to be honest, I have forgotten how many times I have been asked.
I believe that this episode is one to listen to a couple of times as I share a lot of information on a lot of different aspects of how I have trained my palate and it may be a little overwhelming and or hard to take in the first time round of listening. So, I would encourage you to save or bookmark this episode so that you can keep coming back to it. I also, encourage you to have a notepad and or a note open on your phone, tablet or computer that you can use to take notes when I share my top 5 points for this topic and how once again I have trained my palate to be at the place it is today.

    ANNOUNCEMENT TIME

I am super excited to announce that I partnered up with one of Christchurch's best and longest-standing roasters C4 Coffee as their newest affiliate. So, if you are on the market this week or the following week for some fresh coffee, then be sure to click my affiliate link in my bio to browse what C4 Coffee has to offer. I highly recommend their latest Colombian single-origin the Nectario Zuñiga Lactic Natural Light / Filter Roast. I have a bag of this at home at the moment and it is blowing my mind with how crazy and delicious this is. Singing of Passionfruit and Passionfruit. It is like a pornstar martini and a pina-colada cocktail had a love child. It is perfect as a cold brew and or flash brew for the warm weather that we are enjoying here in New Zealand here at the moment.

My next recommendation would be to check out their soon-to-be-released super limited edition, rare micro-lot, award-winning coffee which C4 Coffee are calling the odyssey range which is currently on pre-order. They come in a beautiful-looking 100g tin and you get a washed processed Colombian coffee called Finca Las Flores and which is of the Sidra Variety of coffee beans.

Looking at gifts for that coffee-loving special someone in your life? Then you can't look past the latest addition to the C4 Coffee retail offering and that is the Coffee advent calendar. Consisting of 24 x 20g hand-picked Colombian coffees it is a fantastic way for them to explore different ranges of coffee varieties and processes. Grab these as soon as, as they will no doubt sell out.

Episode 10: Coffee with the 2022 New Zealand Barista Champion - Hanna Teramoto

Episode 10: Coffee with the 2022 New Zealand Barista Champion - Hanna Teramoto

Hey, all you beautiful coffee lovers and welcome to Episode 10 of the Home Barista Podcast - New Zealand’s one and only coffee podcast.

Today’s episode is a New Zealand exclusive as I was the first person privileged to sit down with the 2022 New Zealand Barista Champion - Hanna Teramoto to catch up and talk about her coffee journey of 15 years and how that has led her to be a 2 x NZ Barista Champion.

This conversation with Hanna was so incredible. Her passion for coffee, the industry, and for making the world know that being a career barista is valid, life-giving and a well-respected job is so infectious. Just going to come clean, ever since we have had this conversation it has made me miss being behind the bar so badly.

Hanna’s experience of competing in the barista championships has been nothing short of amazing and full of excitement and that excitement just flows out of her no matter where she is and who she is speaking to. You will hear me say within the podcast that she has inspired me to think about competing in the 2023 barista champs. Don’t hold me to it, but never say never right?

My hope for all of you (no matter if you are a home barista or professional barista) is that you are thinking about how you can take your skill level and love for coffee to another level. For those of you listening who don’t work within the coffee industry but do enjoy a barista-made coffee, my hope is that through this conversation you have been able to gain a deeper understanding of what it is to be a career barista and I hope that the next time you visit your local cafe you fist bump your barista and say thank you.

For those of you wanting to connect with Hanna you can through Instagram and through Coffee Tech NZ for incredible coffee and coffee accessories.

Thank you again all you beautiful coffee lovers. I’ve been your host Sean aka The Drumming Barista here on The Drumming Barista and Home Barista Podcast.

I have two things to ask of you as listeners of the show. Ep 9: Is Coffee Becoming Boring? Part 1

Ep 9: Is Coffee Becoming Boring? Part 1

Hey, all you beautiful coffee lovers and welcome to Episode 9 of the Home Barista Podcast.

In today's episode, I am joined by an insane crew of coffee professionals, self-confessed coffee nerds, coffee roasters, business owners, and influencers. We are talking about a somewhat controversial topic: "Is Coffee Becoming Boring?" This is a question that has been floating around in my mind for a little while as over the past 6 months I have consumed a couple of bags of coffee that have left me very underwhelmed and just confused. But, this question isn't just about drinking coffee, it is also aimed at the industry itself.

For this episode, I am joined by an insane crew of 4 people (3 of them you have already been introduced to here on the Home Barista Podcast) and the fourth person is making her debut. Let me introduce them to you:

Logan - Co-owner of Hammerstone Coffee and Barista Championship Veteran.
Jaye - Barista, and Roaster at Firsthand Coffee and Coffee Influencer at Your Local Barista NZ on Instagram.
Ant - AKA The Magic Roast. Coffee blogger extraordinaire, Wellington coffee legend, Self-confessed coffee nerd, and a very well-respected advocate of the New Zealand coffee industry.
Last but not least making her debut is Michalina - the YouTube coffee queen aka Coffee That Gives A Puck and also a part-time barista in Christchurch with Switch Espresso.

I invited this crew of people to have this conversation with me as I knew (before we even hit record) that the points they were all bringing to the table are coming from a deep wealth of knowledge, passion, hard work, and pure love for coffee that made for one of the best conversations I have been a part of, for a long time. So good in fact, this is a 2 part episode.

ANYWAY, less reading and more listening. Make sure you have a delicious cup of coffee in hand and hit that play button.

Great Podcast

Loved this 3rd episode, some great points that resonated with me being ex-hospo! And I was impressed with the audio quality - a lot of people get this wrong when they first start but Sean nailed it.
Episode 4 with Ant from the Magic Roast I’d a great insight to demystify coffee, and making it more accessible and less snobby!
