Welcome to the Making Waves podcast! Tune in as we interview industry leaders who are making waves of change in the field of marine conservation. From saving sharks to growing coral, we dive into learning about diverse efforts happening around the world to protect our oceans.
This podcast is hosted by students at the University of California, Berkeley who are passionate about saving our planet, especially life underwater. As we venture into the last year of our undergraduate studies, we created this podcast in hopes of helping other aspiring marine conservationists explore marine biology.

Dan Abbott - Reef Check
Dan Abbott is the Central Coast Regional Manager of Reef Check California. He has been involved with the organization as a volunteer and part-time instructor since 2005, and started working for Reef Check full-time in September 2014. Dan received a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Economics and Policy from UC Berkeley. While at Berkeley Dan became an AAUS scientific diver. Most recently, Dan worked as a biologist for Tenera Environmental where he oversaw a large number of monitoring projects in San Francisco Bay, the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and along the California Coast. Additionally Dan spearheaded Tenera’s successful application into AAUS and oversaw their dive program as their Diving Safety Officer. Dan is an active NAUI Instructor, a trained Outdoor Emergency Care Technician, and is a first aid and CPR instructor.

David McGuire - Shark Stewards
David is the Founder and Director of the shark and marine conservation nonprofit “Shark Stewards”. A marine biologist, David is a National Geographic Explorer and a research associate at the California Academy of Sciences where he conducts shark studies and media production in the San Francisco Bay and in SE Asia. He is also an avid filmmaker and sits on the board of the International Ocean Film Festival. Shark Stewards introduced the first North American shark fin trade ban in California and led several states and international movements limiting the overfishing of sharks and the shark fin trade.
