Thoughtful, varied conversations
I don’t always agree with Destin and Matt’s views. But I honestly mean it when I say they are my male role models. Not in like, a father figure sort of way but just in how they carry themselves and having intellectually honest but emotionally respectful conversations.
Top of my list
No Dumb questions is an absolute treasure. It’s a podcast about perspectives that doesn’t require you to agree with either host. Matt and Destin explore their hugely varied topics and share their perspectives with each other. The starting point of every conversation is the foundational assumption that on the whole people are good and doing the best they can with what they’ve got.
Destin’s role is to share his insight which usually has crisp clean edges, rooted in the language of engineering and maths. He often understands complex situations by finding an analogue in engineering terms. He also brings a humility that is only matched by his commitment to giving others their due.
Matt deepens the conversations by not only talking about other perspectives, but by embodying the principles he stands for. His participation conveys authenticity, which really shows up when there’s some feeling to be done. If he’s angry, he’ll share his anger, if he is moved to tears he’ll make space for that. The narratives that prevail are that men should not cry because it is weak. Matt provides a role model in himself that shines a light on that narrative under which it shrinks and shrivels and makes no sense. He is immensely skilled in sharing his own perspectives, especially his faith, in a way that is hugely accessible. There’s no hint of it being because he is trying to convince you of his position, but the presence of it, invites you to consider your own perspective. A subtle and rare talent.
Overall I rate this podcast as probably the best I’ve listened to. It just stands in a class of it’s own. Thank you Matt and Destin.
Always worth a listen
Listening to Matt and Destin is like a breath of fresh air. No matter what the topic is, they approach it with clarity and dignity, you can tell they really care about people and stuff.
After listening to an episode I always come away feeling positive. Or, to quote Matt just now, “a drop in the bucket of Better”. That’s what this show is.
