Protecting Kids from Cyberbullying and Predators Empowered Parenting for Emotional Wellness

What are some of the dangers of the current online world our teens are interacting with, and what are some ways we can help them navigate it safely? This episode features Chris Padgett, a former law enforcement officer who gave presentations about cyberbullying statewide in Florida, talking about his experience with cyberbullying and predatory behavior on the web. You will learn: 1. How to safely introduce your child to the online world. 2. The link between cyberbullying and higher rates of depression and suicidality. 3. Setting parameters for safe online interaction. 4. The prevalence of sexual solicitation of minors online. At just 37 years old, he took an early retirement, finishing his career on the sheriff’s command staff. While in investigations, Chris worked property crimes, sex crimes and robbery/homicide. During his time in sex crimes he was a member of the Florida Attorney General’s task force for cyber safety/bullying. He was also on a sexual assault/domestic violence task force, SWAT and worked closely with Customs and Border Patrol, the US Marshals Service and Homeland Security. Chris has given several thousand speeches - the majority to be on cyber safety. Chris’ knowledge on these matters has allowed him to be on various television programs, news broadcasts and special programmings. With first-hand experience of these matters, Chris has a seen the dangers of cyber bullying and he has a strong passion to help our local youth. To be included in his endeavors is church pastoring and character coaching. Host Dawn Day has a BA in Psychology and has worked as a gifted and talented teacher, a counselor in a group home for emotionally disturbed boys, a tutor in a psychiatric hospital, and a video producer who has interviewed over 600 people in her career. She is a mother of three daughters, all of whom have suffered from depression and suicidal thoughts and attempts. She is the author of Helpless Night, Hopeful Dawn: Staying Positive and Proactive When Your Child is Suicidal.
