When asked to define himself, Nicolas Cage once said, “I am not a demon. I am a lizard, a shark, a heat-seeking panther.” If the past 40 years or so have taught us anything, it’s that Nicolas Cage can’t be contained. Or, better yet, no one can cage the Cage. His incoherent screaming about bees, fire, and vampires tend to make people laugh, but we’re here to tell you that Nicolas Cage is more than just a meme. Tag along with us as we embark on a journey through the good and the god-awful of Mr. Cage’s filmography to try and crack this enigmatic man of mystery.

We Challenge You to a Duel, Mike

Content warning for discussions about suicide, sexual violence, and domestic abuse.

In this episode, Alyssa and Jeanette dive probably too deeply into the film that earned Nicolas Cage his Oscar, Leaving Las Vegas (1995). While this film was an overall critical success for its time, we’ve got some beef with the director, Mike Figgis. Listen as we lose our minds over this piece of crap but find a silver lining in Nic’s award-winning performance, with a sprinkle of bonus Cage fun facts on the side.

We DON’T recommend watching Leaving Las Vegas, but that’s just our personal opinion. If you want to avoid spoilers then it’s probably a good idea to watch it before listening to us smash it to pieces.

Bad Lieutenant? More Like Absolutely Unhinged Lieutenant

There’s no better way to kick off our film analysis than looking at one of Nic’s most unhinged characters in the 2009 remake with the needlessly long title, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. For today’s episode, Jeanette and Alyssa explore Nicolas Cage’s explosive acting style while also observing the disturbing social commentary the film provides about cops, which is unfortunately still incredibly relevant today.

We recommend watching Bad Lieutenant prior to listening in unless you want to have the whole movie spoiled. We really don’t hold back.

In our opening episode of Rage Cage, Jeanette and Alyssa jump straight into the bizarre and head-scratching life of the man, the myth, the legend, Mr. Nicolas Cage. From his humble beginnings under the wing of his legendary uncle, Francis Ford Coppola, to splurging on European castles and larger than life tombstones, Nic has always made it clearer than day that he is anything but ordinary. Come with us on a rollercoaster ride of illegal dinosaur bones, Woody the Woodpecker, and a thrilling pitch for a Paul Blart-esque film that Nic was made to star in.
