Restoring the Forest with GE American Chestnut - Dr. Andy Newhouse and Erik Carlson

This is an update on the American Chestnut Restoration Project, as discussed previously on the podcast. The American Chestnut dominated the forests of Appalachia until an imported fungus destroyed the entire range. Efforts to restore the chestnut and its ecology have employed a biotechnology approach, integrating a gene from wheat that limits the mechanism the fungus uses to attack the tree. Dr. Andy Newhouse and Erik Carlson join the podcast to discuss progress in the project.

Addressing Disparities in Women's Healthcare - Sabrina Johnson, CEO Daré Bioscience

Despite being over half of the population women's health care lags behind other areas of drug development. The problem is caused by many facets, but is augmented by the fact that many of the conditions are not life threatening or are functions of aging. Sabrina Johnson, CEO of Daré Bioscience, discusses how the disparity exists, the pipeline of drugs that seek to mitigate female-specific conditions, and how smaller, leaner businesses can have significant impacts in this space.

A Novel RNAi Approach to Crop Protection - Todd Hauser

A Novel RNAi Approach to Crop Protection - Todd Hauser

Even under the best conditions, crops need our assistance to survive the numerous threats that limit production. Classically, synthetic and natural compounds have been used to control insects, fungi and weeds, sometimes with negative collateral effects or fostering resistance of genetically tolerant genotypes. Todd Hauser from Trillium Ag describes his company's novel RNAi approach.  RNAi can be used to target specific insect species, and his company's design and particle-based technology appears to offer safety, effectiveness, and specificity. We discuss the use of RNAi and how it may be a key point of crop protection strategies, along with its inherent challenges.

Brilliant science podcast

I really enjoy the podcast and the interviews Kevin has so ably conducted - he is an excellent interviewer. He speaks with interesting, relevant, cutting edge scientists about topics ranging through the entire biotechnology sphere. I especially enjoy the food related topics which address questions about how we can sustainably feed our growing world population. Scientists capable of interpreting the (at times) complex scientific concepts discussed are a crucial resource and enhance our understanding of issues we face in the 21st Century and beyond. Well done Kevin!

Highly recommended!

I love this podcast! I look forward with impatience each week for a new episode. You don't have to have a science degree to enjoy the content because Kevin unwraps any complicated concepts using terms that anyone can understand.

A bonus for me is the sections on plant history. The origins of some of the food we eat is fascinating and sometimes surprising.

The episodes cover a wide range of topics, not just GMOs. I have a new appreciation for plant breeders, scientists, and farmers to name just a few of the roles needed to bring us safe and healthy food.

If you've just found this podcast I envy you because you have a rich back catalogue to enjoy :-).

Fantastic and very accessible to the public

No matter what your opinion, this is well worth a listen. Professor Folta encourages questions from the public, and does a great job explaining the science (with many interesting guests as well). This is an energetic forum for public dialogue. Don’t miss the sections where he talks about crop domestication - a different crop each episode!
