A Brit in NZ ,

On Simon Rich’s “We’re Not So Different You and I”

The New Yorker’s output is, by any measure, truly world class. You may not enjoy every episode of this podcast, but it would be foolhardy to suggest they have not gathered here the finest voices of our generation to represent the beauty, horror and absurdity of our times in all its’ meretricious glory.

That said, I felt compelled to write this review by the quiet voice of optimism (in possibly the Western world’s darkest hour) which Rich has somehow outlined in his apparently daft/comic story. If our society cannot see use such simple tales to thread the clear links between (for example) emotional/childhood issues, the global MeToo movement, and the political tendency of our times towards ‘Strong Man’ politicians then I worry historians of the future will soon be writing retrospective essays of our civilisation’s downfall. Let us learn to laugh at such simple lessons while we still have opportunities to do so.

Yin&Yang the Rabbits ,

Curtis Sittenfield ‘A for Alone’

Perfect ending.
