OnWURD 2020 in Black WURD Radio

Black voters played a critical role in electing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, and in those tense days after the election, as officials in the Pennsylvania Convention Center counted, recounted, and certified the votes, all eyes were on Philadelphia. Black voters came through, and WURD played a critical role. Recognizing the existential threat that four more years of Trump’s racism would bring, WURD encouraged listeners to use their power and vote, by mail or in person. In this fourth and final episode of OnWURD 2020 in Black, Sara Lomax-Reese talks with hosts Solomon Jones, Joann Bell, Charles Ellison, and Bishop Dwayne Royster. From Black women’s leadership to the racial animus that still fuels many white voters, we know there is a need for vigilance and accountability. Yet, in this historic week, we make time for reflection and celebration, too.

Sara Lomax-Reese looks back on the racial justice uprisings. Long before George Floyd’s murder and the global protests it sparked, WURD was talking - all day, every day - about systemic racism, police brutality, and the violence white supremacy perpetuates. When the coronavirus shut down the world in March, Sara Lomax-Reese knew WURD Radio would be a lifeline for many of its listeners. And, since racism permeates all aspects of American life, including the health care system, she knew this crisis would hit Black people and businesses harder. The station stepped up in so many ways. In our premiere episode, Sara Lomax-Resse digs deep into the importance of independent Black media with Philadelphia radio legend Cody Anderson and WURD hosts Charles Ellison and Syreeta Martin. WURD is one of the only Black-owned and Black-operated talk radio stations in the country, and its reach goes beyond the airwaves. WURD’s story is also the story of Sara’s family. Her father, Walter P. Lomax, Jr, M.D., bought the station in 2001. He had supported Philadelphia’s Black community over his successful career as a physician, and he recognized that WURD would give his community a voice even after he was gone. In her decade as CEO, Sara has extended her father’s legacy, always with a goal of centering the full humanity of Black people at the core of everything WURD Radio does each day.
