Power, greed, religion and sex: historian Dan Jones brings the drama of mediaeval history to life through compelling stories, fascinating characters and vivid scenes.
“A Dynasty to Die For” tells the story of the Plantagenets, one of the most powerful and dysfunctional families in European history. Their scandals, betrayals and bloody politics shaped the world we live in today.
Season 4 tells the story of two kings, Henry and Edward, who are desperately trying to save their dynasty. Their conflicting personalities will be put to the ultimate test as an old friend, Simon de Montfort, and his growing powerbase threaten to destroy the Plantagenets for good.
NOTE: If you haven’t heard Seasons 1, 2 and 3 you can go back and hear this wild story from the start.

The Iron King | Why does everyone want to control Sicily?
Dan and Daniele dive into the world-shaking events that lead to Philip the Fair becoming King of France, from Sicilian rebellions to papal interference. They also discuss whether Philip liked his nickname “the Fair” and Dan wonders if the French King was more similar to Ken or Zoolander.

The Iron King | 2. The Double Cross
Philip the Fair begins his reign with a strange, robot-like attitude and a fevered dedication to restoring the glory of France. The Iron King | Was Marie of Brabant an evil step-mother?
Dan and Danièle speculate on how Philip managed to trick one of the cleverest Plantagenets to sit on the English throne. Daniele gets into her long-standing beef with Medieval Mansplainer Thomas Aquinus, the suspected poisoning that led to Philip’s ascension and the daddy issues that shaped his reign.

The Iron King | 3. The Pope Slap
Philip the Fair’s vindictive nature ignites when a drunken bishop mouths off about him, calling him “a useless owl”. Possibly not the most devastating burn, but Philip isn’t one to suffer insults, however slight. This sets him on the path to collide with another of Europe’s massive egos, The Pope. Things escalate into a truly deranged smear campaign and culminate in, arguably, the most blasphemous slap in history.

The Iron King | Why was it sexy to have a dad bod in the middle ages?
Dan and Danièle ponder how popes became supreme, Pope Boniface's tragic fate (and name), thug lawyers and the dossier of dirt dug up by Philip. Did pope Boniface die of devastation? And did he chew off his own hands? Dan likes the theory. We also find out what a mediaeval love island show might feature – it’s more dad bod and less abs.
