E066 - I Remember When w/Ted Kartzman and Andy Gadiel - In this episode we inaugurate “I Remember When,” a new segment commemorating some of the greatest moments in the Disco Biscuits’ history. We kick things off with the story of the band’s impromptu show on May 31, 1999, as recounted by the men who staged it: Ted Kartzman and Andy Gadiel.
Ted and Andy have been active members in the jamband community since before the term “jamband” was even in widespread use. Ted was originally a classmate of the Biscuits at the University of Pennsylvania. Andy was responsible for creating some of the first websites dedicated to jambands during the world wide web’s embryonic phase. Together they launched jambase.com, which since 1998 has served as a clearinghouse for information about live music and touring bands. But first and foremost, Ted and Andy are lifelong friends and fans of the Disco Biscuits who have been present for or participated in many of the most momentous episodes in the band’s history.
Ted and Andy walk us through the genesis of the online jamband community, their early experiences seeing the Biscuits, and the series of events leading up to their last-second decision to book the band into the tiny back room of their favorite Chicago bar. Ted and Andy were more than just eye witnesses on musical history; they were and remain catalysts and connectors dedicated to sharing their passion for live music with the world. As such, they have unique perspectives to share on the evolution of the Biscuits’ music and scene and the bubble of positivity that has enveloped the band during its current renaissance.

E062 - The Human CDJ w/Allen Aucoin - Drummer Allen Aucoin returns to the podcast for a wide-ranging interview about the latest evolution of The Disco Biscuits' sound. Allen shares the details of the fitness regimen that keeps him in tip-top shape, the meditation practice that keeps his mind quiet and clear, and the electronic drum sounds that have propelled Tractorbeam Mk3. There are lots of big reveals in this one, including the source of Allen's signature "thirst quencher" samples, the female pop superstar he'd like the band to cover, and the new instrument that he's recently picked up. But most of all, it's an opportunity for Allen to reflect on why 2024 has been, in his words, "the best it's ever been since I've been in the band." We round out the episode with another installment of our series highlighting covers of The Disco Biscuits catalog. This week, Max is joined by Mark Filorama, the director of the Ross Street School Choir, whose recent performance of Marc Brownstein's "Humuhumunukunukuapua'a" has caused a sensation in the jamband world.

This episode represents the first of what will hopefully become an ongoing series of interviews showcasing the contributions of the men and women who work tirelessly behind the scenes to create the live Disco Biscuits experience. Joining us this week is Nik Francis, the band's guitar tech. There's no one better qualified to analyze Barber's tone than Nik, and we were fortunate enough to have him give us a full, in-depth run down of the guitars, amps, pedals, and techniques that he and Barber use to create the band's signature guitar sound. This one is for the gearheads out there, but also for anyone else who's ever wondered how Barber does what only Barber can do.
