How overseas labor improves ordinary North Korean lives – NKNews Podcast Ep. 153

How overseas labor improves ordinary North Korean lives – NKNews Podcast Ep. 153

North Korean workers abroad have been a major controversy and a key target of international sanctions. Often, these individuals are working long hours in poor conditions and with low pay — many liken them to modern-day slave laborers.

But as Kookmin University professor Andrei Lankov and economic researcher Peter Ward point out in a new paper, it’s important to remember that conditions are far worse in North Korea. They argue that North Koreans volunteer for and seek out opportunities abroad and in fact have much more agency than is typically reported.

Lankov and Ward join the North Korea News Podcast to discuss the work conditions of North Korean laborers, human rights, embedded agency, workers rights and the future of North Korean labor exports

US intelligence and strategy on North Korea – NKNews Podcast Ep. 152

US intelligence and strategy on North Korea – NKNews Podcast Ep. 152

What exactly is U.S. intelligence and how does America use it to craft strategies to confront or engage North Korea? Former National Intelligence Officer Markus Garlauskas joins the show to talk about the limits and strengths of intelligence, estimative analysis, North Korea’s nuclear program, ICBMs and other missile capabilities. Garlauskas also discussed summits, why 2015 was in fact the closest the Korean peninsula has come to war in recent years (not 2018), and shares advice on careers related to the Korean peninsula.

Markus V. Garlauskas led the U.S. intelligence community’s strategic analysis on North Korea as the National Intelligence Officer for North Korea from July 2014 to June 2020, after serving in U.S. Forces Korea for 12 years. Following the conclusion of his government appointment as a member of the Senior National Intelligence Service, he joined the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security of the Atlantic Council as a nonresident senior fellow affiliated with its Asia Security Initiative. Interview with ‘The Mole’ director Mads Brügger — NKNews Podcast Ep.151

Interview with ‘The Mole’ director Mads Brügger — NKNews Podcast Ep.151

In 2016, a Danish documentary film director teamed up with two actors who would pretend to be interested in buying weapons and drug components from North Korea. For the next three years, the undercover actors flew around the world to meet with North Korean officials and foreign businessmen.

Director Mads Brügger joins the NK News Podcast to talk about how he chronicled these activities in “The Mole” — a new, three-episode documentary series that uses more than 10 years of secretly-recorded footage. Leveraging hidden cameras, the film shares illegal triangle-trade deals to smuggle Russian oil into the DPRK, underground arms factories on a private Ugandan island and sales meetings on North Korean weapons initially intended for Syria.

North Korea’s rapidly evolving tech scene — NKNews Podcast Ep.149

North Korea’s rapidly evolving tech scene — NKNews Podcast Ep.149

North Korea is the most isolated nation in the world, and the regime expends large resources to keep it that way by impeding information flows, jamming signals and creating proprietary technology and network access incompatible everywhere else.

But the North Korean people are curious about the outside world and are taking real risks to learn about it, experts say. In this episode of the NK News podcast, host Jacco Zwetsloot speaks with

Martyn Williams of North Korea Tech and author Jieun Baek about what trickles into North Korea and how. Baek and Williams also cover the leaflet controversy, Starlink, sim cards, what the North Korean news cycle is like, propoganda, evolving punishment structures for foreign media consumption and their nonprofit, Lumen.
