Episode 91 - Shellay "Ebony" Ward (Part 1)

Episode 91 - Shellay "Ebony" Ward (Part 1)

On November 3, 2007, first responders to a home in Hawks Nest, New South Wales, Australia were shocked and horrified by what they found. On a mattress in a feces-covered bedroom with a boarded-over window lay the twisted, emaciated form of 7-year-old Shellay Ward, who had been deprived of food, water, sunlight, medical attention, and basic human decency for months, if not years. Shellay’s parents, Blakeley and Sharyn Ward, were charged with her murder.

This is the story of the catastrophic failure of multiple government agencies created to protect Australia’s most vulnerable children. It’s also the story of the long, torturous death of an autistic seven-year-old girl who spent her final months imprisoned in her dark, filthy bedroom and who is largely known across Australia as Ebony, the girl who suffered the country’s worst child neglect death.

This is part one of the tragic story of Shellay “Ebony” Ward.

    Re-Release - Episode 36: Jacob Landin (Part 2)

    Re-Release - Episode 36: Jacob Landin (Part 2)

In episode 35, I told you the story of Jacob Landin: a beautiful, happy nine-month-old boy, bursting with life and personality, whose death from blunt force trauma to the head has been unresolved for over 33 years. Despite investigators zeroing in on a single suspect, the case, which over the years saw a periodic resurgence in police interest, has gone officially unsolved, and the man believed to have caused Jacob’s death has gone unpunished.

For episode 36, originally released in November of 2020, I had the honor of speaking with Jacob’s older brother, Eric Carter-Landin. Eric, who was 6 at the time, was initially blamed for causing Jacob’s death, and he has channelled his traumatic childhood experiences and the loss of his beloved brother into his own true crime podcast, True Consequences.

This is part 2 of the infuriating story of Jacob Landin.

    Re-Release - Episode 35: Jacob Landin (Part 1)

In this episode, which was originally released in October of 2020, I’ll tell you the story of Jacob Landin: a beautiful, happy nine-month-old boy, bursting with life and personality, whose death from blunt force trauma to the head has been unresolved for over 33 years. Despite investigators zeroing in on a single suspect, the case, which over the years saw a periodic resurgence in police interest, has gone officially unsolved, and the man believed to have caused Jacob’s death has gone unpunished.

This is the first of two episodes covering Jacob’s story. For part 2, which I will re-release tomorrow, I had the honor of speaking with Jacob’s older brother, Eric Carter-Landin. Eric, who was 6 at the time, was initially blamed for causing Jacob’s death, and he has channeled his traumatic childhood experiences and the loss of his beloved brother into his own true crime podcast, True Consequences. You’ll hear my interview with Eric in the next episode.

This is part 1 of the infuriating story of Jacob Landin.

Episode 88: Judah Morgan (Part 2)

Episode 88: Judah Morgan (Part 2)

Last week, I told you the story of Judah Morgan, a bright, loving four-year-old boy with blond curls, brown eyes, and a disarmingly sweet smile, who was removed in April 2021 from the loving foster family who cared for him for most of his life and placed back in the home of his biological parents, Mary Yoder and Alan Morgan. Six months later, Judah was dead, and Mary and Alan were charged with his abuse, torture, and murder.

In this episode, you’ll hear my conversation with Judah’s foster mom, Jenna Hullett, who is already fighting to change laws to protect other kids like the little boy she loved like her own.

This is part 2 of the infuriating story of Judah Morgan.
