    November 11, 2024. Kasaragod District Court, Kerala. Rain drizzles outside as an elderly couple stands in a quiet corner of the courthouse veranda. In the husband’s hands is a small cardboard box. It’s so small – barely the size of a shoebox. The wife’s fingers tremble on the lid, and when she lifts it, both begin to sob quietly. Inside that box is something no parent ever imagines they’ll have to carry… the skull of their child. Eighteen years ago, their daughter left home to work in a distant city. They never saw her again – until this moment, in the form of a few bone fragments. As the mother, Ayesha, cradles a piece of the skull in her palms, she whispers a prayer through tears. Around them, a cluster of people – activists, lawyers, well-wishers – watch in somber silence. Some are crying too. They all know they are witnessing the final chapter of a horrific story.
