“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to
do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” 1John 4:18

1: “I will not fear”?

Fear’s purpose: to hold you back

Myth: Fear is a part of life I must learn to live with.

Truth: God’s perfect love drives fear away

“Our struggle is… against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” Ephesians
“Fear not, for I am with you…” Isaiah 41:10 NKJV

“If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31b

2: God is for you

Truth: God is for you because He is good

And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever
lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 1John 4:1

“We have come into an intimate experience with God’s love, and we trust in the love He has for us. God is love! Those who are living in love are living in God, and God lives through them. 1John 4:1

App: Victory over fear has little to do with our determination and everything
to do with growing in God’s love

There is no fear in love. 1John 4:1a

I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Ephesians 3:17b-19

3: We all have more of God’s love to grasp

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should
be called children of God! And that is what we are!” 1John 3:1a:

That day when evening came, He said to His disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took Him along, just as He was, in the boat. There were also other boats with Him. 37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to His disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey Him!” 5:1: They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. Mark 4:35-5:1

“What I feared has come upon me…” Job 3:25

God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

How should we respond:

Confess: agree with God about what He already knows

Refocus: instead of fixating on the source of fear, set your sights on God’s great love

Remember: Today’s battle can become tomorrow’s ammo

“The LORD is my strength and my shield; My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart greatly rejoices, And with my song I will praise Him.” Psalm 28:7
