What happens in the ER and how can family docs provide the best to OUD patients when they reach our care? Dr. Lind shares her view from the emergency department, and sheds light on substance use navigators, Bridge programs, stigma, and more.

Dr Lind is the director of education for the Division of Addiction Medicine and is very honored to be program director of the new Addiction Medicine fellowship at Highland-AHS. Our interviewer, Dr. Tipu Khan, MD, FAAFP, FASAM is the Medical Director of the Ventura County Backpack Medicine Group, Primary Care Hepatitis C Eradication Project. He is also Chief of the Ventura County Addiction Medicine Specialty clinic and consultation service, with a speciality in SUD in pregnancy. Dr. Marc D. Lasher, DO specializes in addiction medicine, diagnosing and treating patients with substance abuse issues with the goal of achieving recovery. He attended his family medicine residency at UCSF Fresno and remains in Fresno today. He has offices in Aegis Medical System, and Adventist Health, and runs a free clinic on Saturdays out of a refurbished bus. In his words, “I treat addiction as a chronic disease.” “There are human beings behind addiction and a strong need for someone to touch people’s lives without stigma and taboos.” Our interviewer, Dr. Tipu Khan, MD, FAAFP, FASAM is the Medical Director of the Ventura County Backpack Medicine Group, Primary Care Hepatitis C Eradication Project. These brief stories will bring you into the hearts and minds of our guests. Episode 1: “To Help Others Find Doctors Like You”: A Patient and Her Doctor Talk MOUD
This episode introduces you to a patient and her doctor whose work together has enabled a family to stay together and a strong woman to change the course of her life.
Guests:
Dr. Gloria Sanchez, MD, MPH is a Harbor UCLA Family Medicine Residency faculty and is Board certified in addiction medicine. She has focused her career on assessing and trying to meet the needs of underserved communities. Teaching future physicians the critical skills necessary to assess and treat substance use disorders has become a primary pursuit. Her overall goal remains to create national initiatives in medical training and public policy that meet the needs of vulnerable patient’s suffering from substance use disorders. Jessica is Dr. Sanchez’s patient and, as of this podcast, a Patient Advocate. She is a 34 y/o woman who came to Harbor UCLA to deliver her second child. She met Dr. Sanchez then because she was looking for help with her fentanyl dependence. Jessica transferred from the hospital to an inpatient program, and then to a sober living location with her baby girl. She has been vocal and determined to find help, and is eager to share her experience with you today. She wants to help others find doctors like Dr. Sanchez.
Our interviewer, Dr. Tipu Khan is the Chief of Addiction Medicine, Fellowship Director, and Core FM Faculty at Ventura County Medical Center. He leads the Primary Care Hepatitis C Eradication Project and Backpack Medicine Team. Tipu serves as Director of Addiction Medicine for HealthRight360 Southern California and is an Adjunct Clinical Professor at USC Keck School of Medicine. He practices full spectrum Family Medicine, from ER to inpatient, OB and clinic and has a niche in managing SUD in pregnancy. The Family Docs Podcast is hosted by Rob Assibey, MD, FAAFP.

Rural Family Medicine & OB Deserts (S02E02)

Laura DiPaolo, MD - a core faculty member at the Mercy Redding Family Medicine Residency Program. She was previously an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at UC San Diego where she taught medical students and residents before returning to Northern California to provide primary care in a rural FQHC setting.
