Adding more thoughtfulness to game selection

The tabletop gaming industry has reached a point where it's difficult to keep up on all of the new games, let alone play them. I wanted to narrow my selection of new games to support smaller companies, improve representation (both in terms of game theme and mechanics and artists, designers, publishers, etc.), support a wide and diverse group of players, and discover more games that are not exclusively about conquest. The Playability podcast appeared on my radar at just the right time.

Each episode is short (about 15 or so minutes) and does not aim to be a comprehensive review of any board game covered. What each episode does offer, though, is a series of questions that shows some of the thoughtfulness that went into developing a game using whatever lense of accessibility the designer chooses. As a result, I've learned about games and designers that are putting consideration into ability to play and use components, age, gender, race, and so much more.

I'm using the episodes to help me identify games that have a lot of thought put into their design and target lots more people than every before. I'm really excited to try out and purchase games from designers who are putting so much time and effort into their creations, all to help bring more people to the table.

Expanding the perspective

As the hobby grows the podcasts are moving from white men expressing opinions using narrow criteria to podcasts like this. It explores the hobby in a way which not only helps those who are the traditional boardgame market understand the challenges others have, but also gives a voice to those who haven’t had opportunities.
