Finding Black News Media, from Hayti to Harlem and beyond
When the Carolina Times went out of business in 2020, Cary Wheelous began looking for other Black-owned media outlets. When he was unsuccessful in finding them in one convenient place, he decided to create a space where Black news outlets were aggregated together.
The birth of the Hayti app may have started in Durham, but is now home to Black media outlets of all shapes and sizes, from indie to major publications. From written news stories to podcasts, the Hayti app has something for everyone (and a few new upgrades on their roadmap). If you're looking to create an app, Cary also breaks down how we was able to get Hayti off the ground. Learn more at hayti.com.

Raleigh's First Black-owned Children's Book Store Seeks to Empower Youth
Liberation Station is a children's book store that was created on the belief that youth need a safe space for discovery. A space centered in humanity, joy, and curiosity. A physical space located in downtown Raleigh in view of the capital building made for the perfect location in the eyes of Victoria Scott-Miller and her family.
Starting with bringing curated books and folding table to pop-up events and transitioning to online sales made Victoria feel like they were being "stretched in a way that minimized our presence." We talked about the importance of taking up space and how challenging a system that bans books is in her DNA.
She brings her childhood of listening to Juicy J and Three 6 Mafia to her confident approach to designing a space that anyone can feel safe to learn, read, and grow. Find out how you can support their new location at https://liberationstationbookstore.com/

How to be a better boss when you're an entrepreneur | Lifelong learning is the key.
Durham's first sweet hub has landed in historic East Durham. Stacey Ramos is the founder of Bull City Sweet Shoppe, and the lead curator of the confections that are featured in her shop form herself and other businesses in the area. In getting a brick and mortar location, she had to weigh so many questions – When should we think about hiring? Which businesses fit our model? What is the cost of doing business in a physical location? All of those questions are centered in her belief that whether you're a boss or an employee, you're life shouldn't revolve around work.
Stacey knew from the age of 15 that she wanted to be an entrepreneur, and while her path wasn't linear, she has a wealth of experiences that have contributed to her current success. In this episode, she's candid about her struggles, how she learned what she didn't want to embody as a boss, and how lifelong learning is integral to her success (and anyone's success) as an entrepreneur. Learn more about her brick and mortar location at https://www.bullcitysweetshoppe.com/
