In every ballet studio, there is a wall of mirrors. It reflects the people within. They’re part of a closed, elite group that asks for sacrifice and devotion from its members. This insular community produces iconic artists. It’s founded on a strict power structure, often with one man at the top. By tracing the origins of this unusual lifestyle, starting with the legacy of choreographer George Balanchine and the intimate stories of young dancers, we expose the beauty of an artform and the complexity of ballet culture.

Very well done

Love both seasons of The Turning. Erika is such a good writer and storyteller. Plus, she always includes many perspectives. The only bad part is that there are a lot of annoying, repetitive commercials but I’ve been skipping through them.

Excellent journalism, well produced audio

The host and production team do an excellent job.

Nuanced and haunting

As someone who danced ballet as a girl and has loved it ever since, I was riveted by season 2. Fascinating, thought-provoking, and just as nuanced as season 1. I wasn’t prepared for this but episode 6 made me cry, it brought back so many feelings and memories. Thank you.
