We need to talk about the outdoors. Not just the epic stories, but the important news, the big events and the social issues that permeate the whole of the outdoors. On The Outside is for anyone who spends their time outdoors in the UK and wants to engage in the wider outdoor community. Each episode, a diverse panel of enthusiasts and experts from a range of outdoors sports discuss the news stories that matter to them. We'll look at everything from specific sports news, to headline stories about our countryside and environment, and the viral posts that capture outdoors culture - all in a jargon and judgement free way! If you want to know what's happening outside, you're in the right place.

Plus, what happened at the commemorative Kinder In Colour event this year, our thoughts on events with large numbers of people in the countryside, and what do we mean by "decolonise the countryside"?

Purple Day special: Adventurers Talk Epilepsy w/ Seize Your Adventure
This is a special episode looking at one particular news item. The 26th of March is Purple Day, the International Day of Epilepsy Awareness. It's the one day a year dedicated to raising money and awareness to support everyone who is living with the effects of epilepsy. Right now, people around the globe are cycling, walking, swimming, running and more to raise money to support people living with epilepsy. And if you are one of them, thank you so much.
But one of my biggest passions is advocating for the fact that - people with epilepsy can do these things too. Today's episode is a crossover with another podcast in the Tremula Network. Seize Your Adventure is a podcast sharing stories of advneture and outdoor living with epilepsy. This episode flips the microphone, and Fran
talks to three people who work within the adventure field to find out what they know about epilepsy, what they don’t, and how we can get more people with epilepsy in adventure.
We mention:
These three adventure professionals’ first aid and epilepsy experienceHow they handle risk assessmentsThe different types of seizureBasic epilepsy first aidHow to encourage people with epilepsy to take part in adventureWhat adventure means to themWhere to go to learn more about epilepsy

AS WE REST: Ethical Tourism from THIIIRD Waves
On The Outside is taking a rest, but we're excited to share an episode from another podcast that we think you’ll like!
THIIIRD Waves is one of the outputs of THIIIRD magazine, a platform that amplifies marginalised voices through print, events, and on the airwaves with their podcast. The show explores the intersections of culture and activism, and brings their listeners interviews and discussions with guests who have knowledge and lived experiences on the topic they talk about.
This episode was first released in July 2020, and Hosts Daniela, Rhona and Tryb explore things like how communities are affected by tourism and what a more conscious approach to travelling might look like, with stops at Mount Everest, Venice Island and more. Then Daniella speaks to Tom Selwyn who is professorial research associate at the department of anthropology and sociology at the London Middle East Institute. He is widely published in the field of anthropology of tourism and pilgrimage. He also founded the MA in The Anthropolgy of Tourism, Travel and Pilgrimage at SOAS in 2010.
